Getting Downtube derailleur working
I heard quite a few people on hear say that when they shifted into first gear the chain would often come off. I’ve started to have the same trouble. So just wondering how others managed to sort it out.
It’s the eight speed that I’ve got.

And the little screw that’s supposed to set a limit as to how far the derailleur can go is tightened to the max.

Is your derailer or derailer hanger bent, perchance?

It took me a long time to set mine up out of the box.
The limiting screw doesnt mean too much, if anything.
The cage is sooooo thin and cheap it most assuredly is
bent from shipping and warehousing. Heres what I did :
Put the chain in the 8th cog. The shift cable should be just barely
slack enuff to touch the chain stay. Now the fun part ...Bend, yes,
forcefully bend the cage so the chain will be absolutely straight in line
with the 8th cog. Spin the back wheel with the pedals to detrmine there
is no lumping or coming off the cog. Good luck, and try to be patient
When you have the cable right, it should not jump off on the 1st cog because
of the detents in the grip shifter.

Thanks for the advice guys.
I've just gotten sick of it now and am going to take it into the bike shop.
When I got the bike the bike mechanic did set it up for me, but I started to have a few problems with it so decided to “tune” it a little and it started to do this.
The quality of it really doesn't seem that grate at all.
