Need a MTB that is lightweight any recommendation?
Hey guys! I bought my current bike from Sportchek it is so heavy almost 40lbs made out of steel. I can't take it anymore.
So, I am looking for a MTB that is lightweight about 30lbs, anything less than 32lbs(14.5kgs) will be good. Any recommendation? my budget is $600. I use my bike for 80% commute in the city and 20% light trail. Thanks

go to a LBS and test ride a few bikes in your price range. Get the bike that feels the best to you and fits the best.
try all the big brands

The heaviest damn thing on a stock bike from the LBS in that price range is the wheelset. Save up $200-$300 for a new wheelset and you should be able to easily get in under 28lbs, or less if you get a rigid bike without a boat anchor suspension fork. (Because after the wheelset, the next heaviest thing on a stock LBS bike in that price range is the fork.)
So something like a Giant Rincon might be a good place to start. They run about $500 brand new (much less from various places on the internets). If you could scrape together a little more for a new wheelset, and ditch the stock fork, you'd be right where you want to be.

thanks guys! very helpful tips! Now I narrowed down my choices to Trek 3900 disc(love that matt print finish), Kona Fire mountain, and Giant Yukon. I will visit my LBS for a test ride soon. thanks

I am loving my Giant Yukon with disk brakes. I could do with a slimmer set of tires than the bog Michelins that it came with.
Seems totally reliable. Good price, especially here in taiwan it was dead cheap.
