handholding advice...
Decisions..
Well I am finally at a point where I think I am getting some fine parts for my bicycles.
My Phil Wood hubs arrived in the mail yesterday, 210 after shipping for new 2004 front a rear double fixed!! Add to this the set of promax/MA3s I received Tuesday, I am a fairly happy bicycle addict right now.
Here is where the handholding comes in…
Should I..
A) Build up the shiny silver Phil hubs to the black open pro rims I have already..
B) Buy a new set of as shiny silver open pro/other rims to use, keeping with the scheme.
Since I am will end up spending 400+ for these wheels, I am really leaning towards the latter.
Thanks for the advice.
Also, since I am going to be using a road conversion (kick @ss orange miyata), how do I correctly apply enough torque to hold the Phil hubs in place? With the promax, other hubs I have used, I add a little spacer with teeth to grip into the frame, therefore securing it better. The Phil hubs don’t seem to have enough space to use this item, and I am afraid of pulling my wheel out of the dropouts when applying great force.

Come on, I gotta make my bike look pretty....
God knows I am doing a hell of a job myself, I wear my greasy chef pants and skull cap around most of the time, even when I am not working.
And I don't have a Langster to put the wheels on, although I do have my PISTA which wouldn't work with the Phil hubs I bought NEway (126).
I got a better job and all of my bills paid of so I have some extra $ to spend on "commuting" expenses, call me a style queen, I don't see that as a negative really by default.

Really?
Considering how much I spend each year, and how much I pay for taxes each year it might be a winning combination. Which line... Do you own your own buisness or something?
Like I have said many times before, I still don't have my license yet (26 years old last week) so I justify quite a few expenses on bicycles.
"Yes honey, I need another set of wheels, because.. Um... These ones are not... Um.. good..."
"Sure Phil, whatever"
"Really, these ones have weak spokes.. um... not safe I am sure of it, you don't want my wheel to bust do you?"
"Phil, I already said do what you want, it's your money."
"Sweet, because I already bought em..."

I was able to submit a list of bike parts 2 years ago (about $300 or so) for a tax break at the request of the tax guy. Since I made a "new" purchase this year, I'll be doing the same again.
FYI - my bike is how I travel. This does not apply to recreational purchases.

I have a lot of Phil hubs and the only time I ever had any trouble as on the front fork dropouts of one bike that has a wider slot than the others. The Phil seemed to slide around a little making it hard to center the wheel in the front fork without a lot of hassle. The solution was to change to another style of track hub from another maker with Track nuts and washers and move the Phils onto another bike. I have never had a Phil slip on the rear track drops and I ride a lot of hills. Just use enough force to torque them down and you will be ok. I have one of those long allen wrenches and I carry and use that rather than the shorter variety. You could use your foot on the shorter one but I think that is kind of crude, and inexact.

Is this bike going to have brakes?
I really love black rims and spokes on a brakeless bike, they look mean and sexy. However, if you put them on a bike with brakes they get that shiny stripe on them and I don't dig that. Worst of all is a bike with only a front brake with black rims, then you get only one wheel with a stripe. Ewwwwwww.
All this assumes that you get rims that are totally black by the way, and not ones with a shiny machined stripe on them in the first place.
I usually don't like to demonstrate how much of a style nerd I am.... but you asked.

those open pros that goat has arent ceramic, so they have the machined braking surface. i am thinking about getting ceramics ... and i have a front brake. but i never use it. i *almost* used it the other day when my foot came out and i ran the redlight. but even then i didnt.
i dunno, all black ceramics are nice. but what about electric blue or canary yellow rims? or do they ruin the effect of classic high-flange hubs?

Okay, style time. I have 2 black bikes both 15-20 yo classics. On one I really want to keep the classic look so likely silver hubs and silver rims (Mavis MA-3). Of course deep drop track bars, no brakes and white cloth tape on the bars.
The other a Panasonic is black w/yellow lettering. Yellow rims w/machined walls and black hubs maybe? Yellow trimmed seat and yellow/black marble tape.
Hey, trivial I know but at least they should look good on the days I am not riding them.
