Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Strange back cramp

Today, it was quite hot on my ride, and I hadn't eaten properly before we set out. At the top of a long hill, I got a cramp that felt almost like a stitch. It was underneath my shoulder-blade on the right side near my spine. I reached back and the muscle felt hard as a rock. I barely made it to the top of the hill because my position was just excruciating and it was restricting my ability to take deep breaths. I flopped into the grass at the top and had to take 2-3 minutes to calm down enough for it to go away.

Has anyone had a cramp like this, and if so, could it be a result of my fit and position on the bike? Any tips for exercises or stretches that could help?

Are you pulling on the handlebar while you climb? Relax, put your hands on top of the bars and curl your fingertips under so that your nails are resting on top of the bars. Spin easy gears.

Dehydration is not your friend.
