WELLINGTON, Colo. -- Ten-year-old Alex Romero is recovering after a bike handle bar impaled his right side, centimeters away from his major organs.
Romero told 7NEWS he was riding his bike Tuesday night near his home when he jumped off a curb and fell. As he fell, the bike handles rotated and entered his abdomen. The bike handle pierced his right side just above the hip.
"We were bunny hopping this little curb. It was wet and rainy and my foot slipped," Romero told 7NEWS. "I looked down and saw this bike lever that went up my gut."
Romero's friends ran for help and a firefighter, who happened to be driving by, dialed 911.
Romero's father ran to his son's side, and instead of trying to pull the lever out, wisely cut the cable attaching it to the bike.
"I didn't want any bleeding. Just wanted to leave it in there till we got to the hospital and got X-rays," Ronnie Romero said.
"I instantly went into shock. The firefighters asked me to stand back so he couldn’t hear me," April Romero, Alex's mother said.
Alex Romero was rushed to the Poudre Valley Hospital where Trauma surgeons ordered a CAT scan to assess the damage to his organs.
The CAT scan revealed that the handle had missed all major organs.
"It was good," Alex Romero said. "It was centimeters away from my organs."
Ronnie Romero said he will keep the brake lever, engrave it with a date, and keep it as a reminder that his son is one very lucky young man.

If that was in our local paper, they would have mentioned that he wasn't wearing a proper helmet (even if he was).

wow! Thats a scary story indeed! must've been one of those BMX bikes that the handle bar can swivel 360 degrees

The reason why almost all motorcycle levers have ball ends. In an accident it is amazing how things such as handlebars and control levers can become dangerous weapons. Also why IMO swept back raised bars are a poor choice. The end of a handlebar can be a deadly weapon too in an accident. I am not referring to road bars as the ends are low enough so that they should not be a problem.

Probably didn't have grips or bar plugs. Those naked bars can take core samples, as this kid found out the hard way.

This story reminds me of a kid I knew growing up.
He busted open his chin while trying to jump a curb. All the Moms that heard the story tried to get the rest of us kids to wear helmets...despite the fact that it wouldn't have protected his chin.

The story brought back memories of the old Schwinn Stingray bikes from the late 1960s and early 1970s with the motor vehicle inspired shifter on the top tube. There were many er, rather interesting discussions between parents and child and especially in a more graphic descriptive way between the kids about what would happen if the huge shifter would hit a very important and sensitive (especially for a male) area after an accident. I will let your imaginations run wild with the photo from an actual bike (the yellow one) of that era clearly shows:

Every day a winding road
I smell a law suit coming. There is the store that sold the bike, the company that made the bike, the company that made the brake lever. Heck lets throw in the city too for being so thoughtless and actually installing curbs!
