Read Der. cable question

How much slack should be in my rear derailluer cable on my road bike going down the down tube? I just noticed yesterday that it seems rather loose, it still shifts great but I dont see that much slack necessary...

On modern bikes with indexed shifting there should be hardly any or none.
If you can shift to all of the cogs smoothly then you're good to go.

Are you talking about the cable being loose, or the housing? If the cable, then not loose. If the housing, then it doesn't matter so long as both ends are anchored.

What Al1943 said. If it's friction shifting, a bit of slack doesn't matter, but it's lost motion you really don't need. Too much and you'll run out cable and won't be able to get on the biggest cog.
