What have you done since 6-03 to find your Paramount? I would watch craigslist and place flyers at any/all bike shops, bike co-ops etc. I did find a deleted New York CL posting from 6-10 listing a 1968 Paramount but all info is gone. Good luck in your search.

You know how the saddle and stem are stamped but don't have a serial number for the frame? Might be useful since, with those parts (and those con denti pedals in particular) I'd say there's a decent chance the bike is headed for a parting out. Honestly, in 20 minutes, even if they hadn't managed the lock, they could have removed the pedals and still had a pretty lucrative day of thievery.

Sorry for the loss... Please post up in any and all NYC bike forums. That's the best way to get the word out. Also CL... As useless as that sounds you never know who will see it and chime in.

I've always wondered about this. My bikes aren't particularly expensive or super rare, but enough for me to probably not replace.

I gotta look into some bike insurance.

I found (saw) a stolen bike recently and belatedly got in touch with the owner, who got it back...7-8 days after I saw it. If he had posted his loss on craigslist I would of contacted him right away - he didn't but fortunately word eventually got to him that his bike was spotted.

Truly sorry to read about your loss. Here in Japan we can usually assume that almost any sturdy lock/cable will keep a bike if it's attached to something immovable, although I've had bits nicked off the machine over the years. I've already assumed that if and when I repatriate to Canada, I'll never be able to actually leave a decent bike unattended. Here in Sendai we have some public, underground bike parks that are watched over by attendants in person and on camera.

I called State Farm for an insurance quote. $20K will run me $337/yr but I'll also save 10% on my auto policy so I'd be looking at $254/yr.

Florida is one of the most expensive states for homeowners/renters insurance so most of you would pay less.

My homeowners covers items up to $1000, without itemization. I figure that most of my bikes fall just under that mark, so I'm sticking with the existing policy. I have couple books that I itemized, but that's it. If I ever pick up that '73 Cinelli, I guess that I'll get that itemized.

After two stolen bikes (even using kryptonite), I'm hesitant to leave any bike locked up outside. I'm lucky that I have secure parking at work.

Does insurance for a bike cover if it's stolen from somewhere other than your home?
I always thought that bike theft was just so high that most insurance companies only cover theft from your home property and not from out on the street.

Thanks for all the support everybody. I have been following Craigslist and eBay twice daily since it was stolen, as many have suggested. I have also posted to just about every local online forum I know of, and I have put up signs in as many of the +100 bike shops here in NYC as I could.

As much as I'd like to think that the bike was jacked by pros, it was probably some idiot with access to tools who thought the bike looked shiny. Fingers crossed it finds it's way home.

It's probably alreadty been rattle canned. The distinctive saddle has been removed. Some of the parts have been strippped off. Be sure to look on ebay for the parts. I know every little scratch on my bikes.

When I rode to work today, the bike came in the office with me. I will not leave it unattended outside. If the company bureaucrats are serious about alternative transportation for employees, they won't bother me about it.

I support you 100%. My employer actually put bike racks in the enclosed warehouse, and no one ever complains if I park my bike in one of the rear office bays, out of everyone's way. Whenever I am the first person to arrive in the morning, I lean my bike against the receptionist's desk until opening time, so that others will know that someone is in the building. (They finally figured out they can't tell whether I have arrived by looking for a car in the parking lot. )
