do a search on here about beginning cyclocross. You'll find what you need. Ask you local shops about some training sessions when we get near to the season.

You are in the right city to get into cross. Ask around at you local shops, I'm sure you will get more info than you can handle.

You're in the Portland area so, it's practically done for you. Show up on Bald Peak September 12 with whatever bike you've got and get your feet wet (and dirty).

If you want to get a little more serious, Sellwood Cycles does a series of clinics at Alpenrose Dairy (also in September, I believe) to teach you things like how to get on and off the bike while it's moving and how to run hurdles. The Bike Vigilantes did one in Hillsboro last year.

I got my start with the Heiser Farm race last year, which was cool because there were only 10 people in the beginners race, as compared to the 100 or so you'd get in the Cross Crusade, but you definitely have to do a Cross Crusade race at some point. They're awesome.

Oh man, sorry to bump this from like forever ago.
Is it even possible to find a cross bike that is 43cm(I think) that isn't a kids bike or custom?
I had a couple of the bike shops tell me to look up Sweetpea and IF and get a custom instead.

I would build up a bike from a 26" hardtail mtb frame, with a rigid fork. Plenty of options this way.

Redline sells a 44cm version of its cross bikes. The standover seems a bit high though, at at 731mm or 28.8 inches. Best thing is to hit a shop.

Redline also sells a 24" version - marketed to kids, but the weight seems okay, so I'd contact them to inquire as to the differences if any in terms of manufacturing.
