Hi, cycling to work this morning I noticed that I'd lost the gear indicator window off my SRAM X4 8 speed trigger. The bike's only 4 weeks old so although it doesn't affect the ride it does annoy me slightly.

Anyone know where I could get a replacement?

I lost mine a long time ago. It really doesnt matter what gear your in, aslong as it works.

You could try making your own out of a Matchbox car windshield.

That's interesting. A friend of mine just bought a Specialized Hardrock Sport Disc, which also has the SRAM X-4s as well. The first time he tried to shift into the big chainring the little clear cover popped off.
They just snap on, but they seem to come off pretty easily - matter of time before it's lost. Design flaw? Kind of comes across as cheap.

He's only had it a couple of weeks - is going to take it back to the bike shop and see if they can do something with it under warranty.

The gear indicator window on my Hardrock fell out the first time I rode the bike. It snapped back-on.

Yeah, unfortunately I lost mine in between putting it on the car bike rack and taking it off. It could be anywhere on a 23 mile stretch

If you have a computer on the bike, try losing it. It's even better!

I'd go back to the bike shop where you got it and see what they would do.

I had a bike crash a few weeks ago on my road bike, and the Ultrega shifting caps cracked and broke off...I ordered 2 new ones for $6 a piece from the bike shop.

I realize that my friend did not spend thousands, but even at the $550 price
point I would expect quality parts where pieces don't fall off on the first
ride. He could just as easily bought a Wal Mart bike for that.

I recommended Specialized to him, so maybe I'm the one with egg on my face.

I assure you dude...there is a whole lot more that will fall off a WalMart bike on the first ride.

Example:

It was a rainy Friday morning at the Guvna's Mansion. It was supposed to be an 8 person group-ride. When it got wet, 4 people stayed home. Skyler was the new guy. He showed up on a new "high zoot" WalMart dual suspension ride. Terrible conditions for a noobie to say the least. The roots/rocks were slicker'n'snot proving the WalMart tires to be no match for the ultra-gnarly Kansas terrain.

Skyler didn't know which gear was which as we headed toward the first set of short climbs. Once we convinced him to stay in his middle ring and just concentrate on the rear shifter...he spent the rest of his ride fighting missed shifts and skipped gears. He'd stand to climb and the chain would slip across the cassette, grinding steel against steel...




...still think a WalMart bike is a good idea?

It's a silly little window. If you can get a new one...super-glue it on.

I'm not saying that the bike is ****e. I'm saying that the piece that fell off isn't a critical piece. First hard fall and it probably would have been gone anyway. It's just one less thing to litter the trail.

better than having one that rattles.
Mine would rattle whenever I was on pavement, so I slapped some glue on there. no more rattle, and the window is all smeared, all better.

I think I may have been misunderstood.

I would never personally recommend any bike from Wal Mart, Target, Costco,
etc. It's simply when you spend money to obtain a product from a recognized
name in the business, be it Trek, Fisher, Specialized, et al, I don't expect pieces
to just fall off - at least not until there has been some abuse over time anyway.

I guess I'm just anal that way - if it was my bike I would be back at the bike shop
finding out what they will do to make it right.

In the final analysis, glue may be the best solution.

The nicer ones don't have indicators.

I'd only worry about it if you think moisture and crud will work its way into the shifter innards.

If some well-placed electrical tape would make it work?

I know I have SRAM x.7 shifters (2006 model?) on one of my bikes, and I don't think the indicators are removable like on the higher-end Shimano models.
