Cycling Shoes with 2 'football style' cleats?

Cycling Shoes with 2 'football style' cleats?
Can someone tell me what two 1/2" screw-in-football type cleats are doing on a pair of casual bike shoes? They're located under the toe area. I've never seen anything like it.
My buddy at work just upgraded from his $100 hardware store 'mountain bike' clunker to a Giant FCR3.
Over the weekend he purchased some gear including the shoes mentioned. They're casuals with a hard sole, lots of tread and he's opted not to go with clipless pedals just yet. But the first thing that struck me when I looked at his shoe were those 'cleats.' The manufacturer is 'Exustar.'

Sound like cyclocross shoes to me. The cleats help you run up muddy slopes.

I've seen shoes like this before. Maybe you can screw in ice-spikes for winter riding.

They're on a lot of shoes now. They come with the cleats (optional to install). I'm also of the opinion they're for cyclocross use as was pointed out above.

As mentioned above, the spikes are for Cross or mountain biking. If you've ever tried to walk up a muddy slope carrying a bicycle you'll understand the importance of these. If you don't do this type of riding you can just ignore them.
