Nishiki Olympic 12 speed - $120 (Near Kendall Cinema)

Date: 2011-08-24, 12:47PM EDT
Reply to: sale-spbtx-2563616724@craigslist.org [Errors when replying to ads?]
For sale: one Nishiki Olympic in blue and white. This is a classic early '80s 12 speed of double-butted 4130 Cr-Mo steel (a big step up from the basic "stovepipe" bikes cranked out at the time). It is consequently surprisingly light and has an amazingly agile ride that is only slightly whippy, and also decent braking capability. It also has real, usable hoods and doesn't have the stem shifters and "suicide bars" that were common on bikes of the era (the indexed shifters are on the downtube as seen in the second photo, which is both simpler, less dangerous, and more elegant). I like the model so much that I bought this one when my previous one was stolen. Alas, I'm moving out of state and can't take it with me.

Size:
I'm 5'10" and this bike fits me well. It should be good for people with typical proportions from about 5'7" to 6'. Another way of describing it is that it's the equivalent of a 53-54cm frame in fit.

Bike history and condition:
I bought it from the original owner with all original parts. He had only used it a few times as a child, and it sat in the garage for 25 years after that. I have replaced the tires and tubes but everything else is still as per new. So, the front tire is new, and is a nice quality city model. Unfortunately the rear tire and tube need to be replaced due to a bulge and blowout on Sunday of the defective tire. That will run $30 in parts at the bike shop. It needs a new chain (the current one works but is rusty) and I have a nice one but haven't yet put it on and my tools are now out of state. The new chain will be included with the bike. There are some chips and a bit of rust but it's sound and once the chain and tire are on it will be better than it was new.

Other bits: I have a new tire I can include with the bike but it was pulled from another bike when purchased and doesn't quite fit (too wide for the frame). If you have a tourer or other 700c bike this could be very useful to you. You might also be able to swap with a bike coop for a suitable tire. I will also throw in a tube for that tire or mountain bike tire (26"), your choice. Just getting rid of assorted bike repair bits...

I have a great Schwinn bicycle for sale, as it has been kept inside for months! Awesome for someone who takes riding a fast bicycle serious -- mostly used for racing or those great outside long rides -- featuring 25" Columbus frame, top-to-bottom Shimano components and more (See Pix)

Selling for $395.00 cuz that includes already a $50 summer rebate!

If you are interested, then please call Anthony 617 437-9274 or email back to ad posting. Bike is currently located around Copley/JFK/UMass/SoBos/SoEnd if you like to see it and/or take a test ride

Thanks and happy summer bike riding ~

Anthony

I remember this one.

If it hasn't moved in 3 weeks in a hot market, pretty sure it's priced too high, summer rebate or not.

Because $800 for a bike that appears to have to stripped of it's paint and has a mish mash of Shimano, Campagnolo and Dia Compe isn't particularly a good deal. Not sure how that looks all original to anyone.

it seems atleast one brake pad is missing and perhaps the brake reach does not match the wheel size

I have to admit that the word "stolen" screamed out at me when I saw each one of these 5 bikes had a missing wheel, but who am I to judge? There could be a reasonable explanation.

In any case, anyone in PA interested in getting 5 flippers for (perhaps) the price of one?

My first ever repaint was a Tommasini Super Prestige and Domenic's did it; a fantastic job, with original decals for the princely sum of $260 back in 2002. Great place, even greater staff.

This frame/ad is mine.
I did a lot of research into this frame after I purchased it. I even spoke to Mr. Malvestuto himself on the phone to verify and get more information. Mr. Malvestuto is a true gentleman and a wealth of vintage cycling information. We spoke for quite some time about more than just this frame. At the end of our discussion, I thanked him for his time and let him know it was an honor speaking with him. I'll always remember his last comment he made in his slow, thick, Italian accent, "Well-a thank you.... Every cyclist is my friend". A real top notch, classy gentleman.
