I need some help here. I rode today and felt good I was pounding up a short steep hill up out of the saddle leggs felt great, how ever as I peaked the hill my lungs were burning to the point I felt like Vomiting it hurt so much I wanted to dismount and just cry.....What is that burning? do lungs go anerobic? My leggs were OK...I was very uncomfortable....

Thanks

It just means you're doing it right. I don't know why they burn either, but they do. I'm guessing it's blood lactate level. Try doing over/under intervals and see if the burning becomes less or at least less painful. If that's the cause, those intervals should help.

It really does not happen to me. The blood flowing out of the lung capillary bed gets 99+% oxygenated. Unless you have emphysema, you have more lung capacity than you need. What cause one to breathe fast is the buildup of CO2 in the blood. As for the other symptoms, I don't know and I very much doubt that anyone really knows what causes them.

I've been thinking about your post ever since I made my first, too quick, reply. Burning to where you want to barf is not normal! If I do a very hard TT effort, especially short, like 10 miles, my lungs will burn. It used to be a little worse years ago, but never anything like you describe. Probably due to drying from deep, rapid breathing.

So I googled "cycling burning lungs" for you. Go do that, read some of the hits, then see a doctor.

+1

Mine burn to the point where I feel like they are shutting down on me and I'm drowning and can't breathe. In my case, I've been diagnosed with EIA and an inhaler solves the problem.
