Bicycle back;ash grows against shock jocks who want to injure cyclists

There's a petition and boycott started... https://bit.ly/Q5Fx1

I'm sure the shock jocks and the radio station sent out links to the boycott to all the media stations. They just hit a home run in terms of media exposure and free publicity.

For every person that joins the boycott, you'll have 10 tune in to find out what all the controversy is about.

Boycotting the station won't do much.
Publishing a list of the show's sponsors and putting pressure on them.....that might have an affect.

Cyclists in the Raleigh area succeeded in getting a few empathetic advertisers to pull thousands of dollars in ads from Clear Channel Radio in the wake of a similar broadcast a few years ago.

They also succeeded in seriously offending some business owners and employees.

Whatever you do, be polite with the sponsors if you want their empathy.

if these guys are working for Clear Channel their days are numbered anyway. They are paying one of their on-air personalities $400 million, and that is sucking the life out of the company. The last rock station in our area was recently shut down and substituted with a talk radio station because Clear Channel didn't want to pay the on-air personalities.

I don't think it's Clear Channel.

It's not Clear Channel, it's Greater Media. I sent a letter to the station head as well as filed a complaint with the FCC. Full text of those at my blog (14bikes.com)

Thanks for posting this. I responded to the boycott. Lousy station anyway.

I've exchanged two pleasant sets of emails with the show's traffic reporter. She's defensive of the hosts' expression of frustration (which I think is fine, to defend their right to vent) but appears open minded about responsible cyclists' rights on the roadways including taking the lane.

I listened to the whole radio piece, and honestly, I didn't think it was that bad. They weren't exactly telling people to go out and kill a cyclist. And they somewhat did say that they weren't referring to ALL cyclists.

Rather than a boycott and all of that, why don't some Detroit-area cyclists invite them to take a pleasant ride one day? That way, they'll see the road the way we see it for a bit.

This is probably NOT an FCC matter. Programming is not regulated, only language and obscenity standards defined over the last 76 years.

Your avenue is best addressed locally and with the management and this person.

I would be convinced he's gone though a lot of frustatration and it's unfortuate if his displeasure cross a boundary. I also think his words could contain many euphamisms, some of which he might regret saying as he did.

The FCC believes that the best enforcement for local disagreements is to solve them locally. Send letters, emails...all must be placed on file for the public.

Screaming about it will not serve you and won't be beneficial. Heal the wound and move on.
