This could have turned into another "Broken Body" story
The rear brakes on my SWB 'bent have needed adjustment for a while as they bearly provided any stopping power at all. I had a few spare minutes this afternoon and I was in the mood to do a little wrenching so I had a go at them.
After snugging in the cable a bit and cleaning the rims (might as well clean them both while I was at it) I had good braking power both front and rear again. I would like a little more time to tweak the rear brakes a bit more, actually I think complete removal, cleaning, lube the posts and reassembly is in order...but I need more time than I had today. What I've got now will suffice nicely until the weekend.
Coming in to work this evening I lost my front brakes about four miles into the ride. Somehow the cable went slack causing the V-Brake to pop open. I noticed this soon enough and thanks to having a good rear brake I stopped and put the brake back together. Unfortunately, the front cable was still a touch too loose to stop the bike. Thank goodness I have a good rear brake!!!
A mile later at the bike rack at work I do a closer investigation of the front brake system. I don't know why, but I had to tighten the cable a bit to get good braking. Did I accidently kick the V-brake and cause the cable to slip while jockeying the bike around a busy intersection just prior to the failure? I could have as it's near my right heel. I may never know the answer. I'm glad I had finally taken the time to fix the rear brake just hours earlier though.
In the future I'll address these items in a much more timely manner. This could have been another broken body story.

Sounds to me like when you were adjusting your front brake you somehow got one of your cable housing ends caught at the end of the cable stop. That's why when you got it reseated you had to retighten the brake cable. I'm thinking that now you're good-to-go.
I'm glad that you didn't crash or break any body parts. There's been entirely too much of that on 50+ recently.
