Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Ew my seat smells, what do I do?

While I was moving my seat foward a little, I took a wiff of the stock seat on my 02' OCR2 and holy cow it smells like a moldy old gym locker room. What can I do?

I wouldn't do anything. It ll smell again after a few rides. Think about it. It bathes in your crack sweat. What does it matter ? Who's gonna be sniffing your saddle ?

But if he's wearing ridding shorts with the padding like they all have how could the butt cheese odor get through to it? Wait a minute! Now don't tell us you aren't wearing ridding shorts!

That's a question to which I hope I never see an answer.

Worst. Thread. Ever.

The old ass sweat aroma of your saddle is an aquired taste. I would suggest sniffing it for long periods of time after each ride until you get used to it, then it won't bother you anymore.

Man, the worst part about this thread is that I almost, ALMOST, went over to my bike to sniff the seat. I don't know if I can hold myself back. In fact... Hmmm, smells like roses to me .

hey - are you still showering with your bike? (remember that thread?) if so, the moisture may create a slight mildew problem. probably not, but just a thought...

It's entirely possible that your seat doesn't smell as bad as you think. Relatively speaking, of course.

I suggest you go to a place where there are many used bicycles parked, such as a university or a large city where bike messengers ply their trade. Spend hours carefully sniffing seats until you feel you've taken a fair sampling and are ready to reach a conclusion.

I'm betting you will be relieved to find your seat is not nearly as smelly as you feared.

LOL ok I should have never posted this to you people.

a) I DO wear shorts so I'm not sitting on the bike on my naked butt.
b) I had the bike upright so I had to get real close to the seat with my head upside down to look at the markings to reposition it.
c) I do show before I ride.
d) I know how to wipe.
e) I wear gel shorts and the solid layer of gel as I understand it is vapor impermeable.
f) Just for the comments that I've been getting, I hope I've secretly inspired you all to take a wiff of your seats and that you all get knocked back by it.

Only after a long ride in heavy rain, I still say it's the best way to clean the bike off quickly. I keep the seat dry though.

I 'spose that's one good thing about a smooth-finished seat like my Avocet. Any... um... moisture wipes right off.

Maybe we should all be "riding on the rivets" as Phil Ligget says...

TMI bro.. TMI!!! lol

humm.. perhaps change a new seat.. or... better yet, don't sweat too much on ur arse. actually u should take ur seat with seat post off and then leave it in the sun after ur ride... u know.. kinda like how chinese people would take their thick blankets out into the sun and put it on the chair to let it air out.

I don't want to know how it got there. Just try a mild saddle soap and a tooth brush. If it's leather, just rewax it. To keep your woman/co-riders happy, just duct tape a car deoderizer under the saddle will do the trick!
