I love the look on peoples faces....
When I am keeping pace with them going 30 mph, it is awesome I hope I can get to the point where I can pace cars going 40 that would be keen.

Pace as in on their bumper in a draft? No wonder they are shocked, they are afraid of slowing down and killing you.
Side by side yes, but what are you doing going 30 on a bike next to a car and not watching the road in front of you?
40, sure downhill or on the flats in a hurricane.

There's one spot where I can do 35-40 downhill on my hybrid on the way to work, on a freeway access road. I tell ya, it's kind of cool watching the cars getting off the freeway and tuck in behind me.

The last mile of my commute into work is a nice downhill with a 30mph speed limit and it's awesome passing traffic as I usually break 40 most mornings. Too busy watching the road to notice any reaction from drivers though

Yes, it is fun. I paced an SUV at 50km/h plus last weekend and the look on the passenger's face was priceless. No nannying here...

I have a big road on one route choice and cars open it up to 40mph though the speed limit is 25. I beat most of them from light-to-light, though they pass me in between the lights.

When I lived in St John's Newfoundland I used to race the transit bus to the university and would almost invariably beat them. I got chatting with a driver one day when taking the bus and he commented about this guy on a bike wearing a yellow jacket that used to burn by him all the time. I grinned as I told him that it was me.

I have a section of my commute that's a long downhill run where the speed limit is 35. I'll get up to 40 on that run. I like it when the cars come up behind me as I'm starting down the hill, pull left to go around, then pull back in when they realize how fast we're going.
I sure hope I don't wipe out on that section.
