Cyclocross and Gravelbiking (Recreational) This has to be the most physically intense sport ever invented. It's high speed bicycle racing on a short off road course or riding the off pavement rides on gravel like : "Unbound Gravel". We also have a dedicated Racing forum for the Cyclocross Hard Core Racers.

Catastrophic failure: help identify cause

I was riding my CX bike to work this morning, riding it along the packed-dirt trail that parallels the asphalt MUP.

As I'm riding I hear a "thud thud thud thud thud thud BOOM" with the boom being my rear tire going flat.

here's what the tube looks like:

Any idea what could have caused this?

Tires are 700x35 Maxxis Locusts. Wheels are Soul S4.0. Tubes are Bontrager 700x35-44c

Oh, and a flat tire is not a "Catastrophic failure". This is:

Wow I've never seen anything like that. A blown tube! Who would have thought? It's another of these JRA (just riding along) incidences that I've heard about.

how does the bead of the tire look?

I have seen some Maxxis cross tires with some shoddy looking beads, and if the bead came off the rim a little bit that would explain the thumping and then when enough tube got through that would explain the tube blowing out

+1

I had that type of flat with my ritchey speedmax tires. The tire bead unseated and started to bulge to the side, thus the thud thud thud sound of the tire/tube hitting the frame. These tires were way loose on my rims; I could put them on with no effort with one thumb. Needless to say, I no longer ride these tires.

It may indeed be a tire issue. I'd been planning on putting mud2's on, guess I'll prioritize that now.
