Love the new Garmin 305...

I've had mine since '06 and I love it. As soon as it's done uploading and charging I fasten it to my bike so I don't forget it. It's my favorite cycle accessory.

I especially love my 305 as it had me sprinting to 56km/h today - but I'm not entirely sure that isn't some random data glitch.

Must be the Forerunner 305 - You can also send to Google Earth.

So you have the 305, it doesn't have maps on the screen but it knows where you have been and does the route maps like that when you upload the data?
You have the HR monitor and speed/cadence sensor too right?
Do you have to upload to garmin connect, or can you have this info on your local computer for your own training logs?
I am looking at these, and can't decide if I want just the 305 or get the 705 for mapping and power if I want it in the future.

Yes, I have the HR & Cadence/Speed sensor.
You can use the supplied software and have it locally also, i use both.
I was having the same debate. I was looking into it and decided with the 305 for a few reasons.
1. Weight - I know that in the scheme of things it doesn't matter a lot but hey the 705 was about a full pound. and the 305 is far less.
2. Battery life.
3. Size of the unit.
4. Usage, i don't have the real need for the maps i can just have standard directions.

Doing a 2km loop with a group, sprint with a recovery. Blew up on first lap, did a few slower ones, then back with the group for a fast final lap. Other guys had 50+ km/h readings, but I wasn't sure about mine so I checked stuff like the tire size in the set up etc. Looks like I might have done this speed as I overtook a couple of guys in the sprint and was closing on the front riders who hit 50+.

I'm another Edge 305 lover as well. I've had mine for three months and it's been a great tool. I have no ambitions to race, but it's nice to finally have some goals to keep track of and quantify my time on the bike.
If you have a mac do yourself a favor and pick up Ascent. It's much better and more reliable software than Garmin Connect or Garmin Training Center.

I have a Forerunner 305 and it does everything I need it to do. I wish Garmin would make the TRI setup work for everything, but most pools it doesn't matter. But I would like it to track my Heart Rate to see how I am doing. There are days I am busting my butt, or at least I think I am, but that is me and the pool.

You can upload both the Edge and the Forerunner to Garmin Connect and get a much clearer map then you get with the Garmin Training center software that comes with the unit. It's free and I ultimately disconnected my "Training Center" and just use the "Garmin Connect" It's interesting to map out where you've been and compare your rides for progress.

They're both great devices. I've been using a Garmin Edge 705 for the last 12 months. For me, the slightly larger screen and better battery life, combined with finding a terrific deal made the 705 a no-brainer. The fact that it has maps and ANT+Sport power-meter compatibility were icing on the cake. Have to admit that I rarely use maps while on the bike, but I loved having them when I rode down the Pacific coast to Los Angeles. Can't imagine doing a long trip without GPS now!

Yikes! Where'd you get your information?!? The Garmin Edge 305 weighs 3.1 ounces, according to Garmin, while the Edge 705 weighs 3.7 ounces. The Edge 705 also has better battery life than the Edge 305: 15 hours for the 705 versus 12 hours for the 305, at least according to Garmin.
