I have ripped off the valve trying to put air in the tubes more often than I have got flats. Pisses me off. Does this happen with anyone here ? I have road bike with presta valve. Don't look like the pump is the problem. Any tips ?

And now for the rant. 5 in the morning, I am about to leave for work. Figure let me fill up air so I could avoid flat. Vhoooom. Ripped the valve off. The man in me says not a problem. Race to change the tube, and get going. Could have got a flat on my way. So I change the tube. Start filling up the air. Baaaaaam .. The tube blows up. Probably pinched or something Gave up on it, and just drove to work with my honey !

I've never torn a valve stem off but I can tell you that life is easier if you have a pump with a hose.

I toured with a pump that did not have a hose and I tore a hole in the valve several times when I was just trying to add some air as you described. Then I upgraded to a pump like the top peak road/mountain/min morph and will never go back! I have never ripped a valve completely off, just tore a hole in the base.

My floor pump (some blackburn model) really grabs ahold of the threaded presta valves for some reason and won't release without rocking it back and forth. The only thing I can suggest is running the little nut all the way down the valve to help keep it from moving.

I use schrader valves and an air compressor so filling my tires means "pick up hose end, press onto valve, check gauge, if low, pull trigger, release, repeat until gauge reads where I want it." About 6 seconds per tire, and it's impossible to damage the valve.

I gave up on presta valves when I realized that as far as I can tell, there's absolutely no reason for them. At one point I had one presta and one schrader on my bike, and I had no more trouble filling one than the other up to 100 pounds, which is as high as I've ever wanted. presta just meant having to carry adaptors and junk.

I've had it happen with both value types. Try not to push the pump head too far down, but yes sometimes it will not let go.

I had an issue with the last floor pump I owned (15 year old Avenir pump) with getting the stem to release from the pump head. I switched to a Topeak JB Pro with the self-adjusting chuck, and there hasn't been a problem.
If you're really having issues, look for Presta tubes without threaded stems.

One time, after airing up a Presta-valve wheel, when I detached the pump the inside part of the valve blew about ten feet into the air. I still can't figure out how that happened.

A hose would avoid this. If you are at home, a floor pump is easier also ($30 for a Joe Blow Sport).

But, anyway, you're doing it wrong.

I'd guess you are trying to pump too fast and not stablizing the pump head on the valve with your hand.

The trick is to pump slowly and in control.

Try putting a little spit in the valve end of the pump. I used to tear and damage the valve stem where it connects to the tube all the time. I asked a bike club veteran about this and he said use spit on the valve end fo the pump. Have not had this happen since.

Great idea...also, make sure you're not over tightening the valve nut, it can help to pull the valve out of the tire...

I had the same problem, it seemed to be the combination of Performance Tubes and a Blackburn frame pump....happend about 6 times in a one year period

Never had this issue, though (working in bike stores) I know many people do.

Number one reason for this is: Not releasing valve-locking mech on pump.

Another vote for a pump like Road Morph c/w hose. Also get a decent floor pump for home use.

Even so, don't just yank on hose to remove; use knuckles to lever against rim while holding valve stem. It's one of those skills that's second nature to old dogs.

I put my palm on the head of the pump, which keeps it from twist and pushing the stem.

Why the need to carry adaptors? Carry the right pump/head.

lezyne pumps have a hose and also a head that threads onto the valve stem. . .and they are very well made, both the floor pumps and the portables. . .

With my Blackburn pump if I put the nozzle all the way down on the valve stem it is a problem when trying to take it off after pumping. I stopped putting the nozzle all the way down on the valve stem. Problem pretty much solved.

I've never had this problem until this year. My Blackburn floor pump has a head with holes for both presta and schrader valves. Eventually the presta side started getting loose enough that it wouldn't seal very well. I went to a few LBS' and one of them had some of the same heads from junked pumps in the back. A mechanic gave me a head which fit my pump, unfortunately about the 2nd time I used it I ended up ripping the valve stem out of the tube it was so tight. After that I broke down and bought a floor pump with a smart head. I think the next time I replace tubes I'm going to go with the ones without threads.

I have never ripped a valve off; however, I have bent the inner valve core and on the subsequent refilling ripped the core out of the valve. That was also the occasion I stepped in poop while changing the tube. Insult upon injury.
