Differentiating a PX10 from a PX8?

Hey guys. In about a month, one of my contacts will be down from the Sacramento area with a few frames that he's willing to give me.

One is an unimportant Japanese import from the eighties, but the second one is what intrigues me. I know that it's going to be my winter resto project no matter what is said within this thread, as I have acquired a Peugeot Professional wheelset from the same time period. Anyways, all I know about it, is that it is a Peugeot.

I suspect it to be either a PX8 or a PX10, but I know that those two models are light years apart, so... how do I differentiate between the two when I receive the frame? Are there any hidden clues to differentiate the two?

Thanks,
Dan

I'm fairly sure that you mean UO8, But it's pretty easy. The UO8 will have lugs with little squared-off sections cut into the, and the PX10 will have Nervex lugs, with are flowing and pointy.
Here's a link to a picture of the Nervex lugs on a raleigh:
https://farm2.static.flickr.com/1215/...3bdb13.jpg?v=0

EDIT: I don't have any knowledge of the PX-8 model, but it can still be applied between the UO-8 and PX10.

In general by the type of tubing and lugwork. A PX10 will have Reynolds tubing while the PX8 will have Peugeots generic 'cadre allegre' tubing and the typical 'Aztec' lugwork.

Alright, cool. I thought I was going to have to dig around through serial numbers searches and the such. <-- Noob.

Thanks for the help, I'll up this thread when I get the frame in.

OK, so I have begun accumulation of parts for this bike.

-Peugeot PX10 Professional wheelset with Atom Freewheel
-Huret Success ti rear derailleur (what is the Success' front mate?)
-Some random used Brooks saddle from CL

What are the original brakes (calipers and levers) and shifters on these? Huret? Suntour? I've heard that Campy parts never came stock on a Peugeot...

And cranks...

PX-10's usually came with Stronglight 93 cranks, Mafac Racer calipers and levers, Simplex shifters. U08's had cottered steel cranks.

You could try searching for a Jubilee FD. The design and look are nearly identical.

Here's the Jubilee:

Sounds good, I'll keep my eyes out for these parts. It's probably going to end up taking a chunk out of my pocket, but we shall see...

Not all PX10s had fancy Nervex lugs. For instance, for 1974 the PX10e had fancy Nervex lugs but the more expensive PX10LE had plain lugs.

If it doesn't have a half chromed fork and half chromed stays, it isn't a PX-10. (just having them doesn't mean that it is though).

OK... so how do I differentiate between the two?

I have a crappy picture for you guys. Half chromed fork, seized seatpost and triple chainring:

The decals put it around '74

That is NOT a PX10 and in all likelyhood is NOT a PX8. I'll need to see ome type of picture that wasnt taken through a piece of plastic with happy meal disposable camera.

PX10: Zero braze-ons. None. Prior to to 1979 there are NO exceptions to this rule.
PX8: Usualy have chrome rear stays but the bike in question has a generator tab amongst other features so the possibility is still open.

Does it have an 'inoxydable' decal?

That's no PX-10.

Looks like a U-08 with a replacement crankset. Could possibly be something a little bit better.

I have no idea, I did not take the picture and I do not have the frame. I wish it wasn't taken with a "happy meal disposable camera" as well.

And excuse my ignorance, but what is a generator tab?

Its a tab to mount a generator. ITs located on the left seatstay just below the brake caliper. It also appears to have rack eyelets on the seatstays.

So, it's a touring bike? What would it be if it has a generator tab?

I'd use that term loosely.....looking through some literature it could be a PX8. Whats that decal by shift levers say?

Anyways, what type of Stronglight crankset is this? Found it for $30, and am hoping that it is a 93...

It's a 93, or at least most of one.

They normally look more like this:

When in doubt, with a 1970s Peugeot, assume it is not a PX10. Seems like every couple of weeks someone posts a U08 or similar that they think is a PX10. Peugeot made millions of the UO8s during the bike boom, and that's usually what you will find. The really good news is that you have an upgraded BB and crankset. Thats a big plus!
