What to say when people ask you why you want to pedal all the time...
Normally when asked why I would want to pedal constantly I just respond with a simple "that's just what I like" but today this guy was really persistant and kept asking for a reason. I started getting annoyed and just told him I had restless leg syndrome and pedaled away. What are other good responses?

Read up Sheldon Brown, he convinced me to convert my latest free bike (12 speed) to fixed gear. Go to Sheldon before listening to any of the yahoos here.

i've never had anyone ask me this before, they probably just assume i'm a hipster (a correct assumption).
I think when my mom asked a couple years ago i said why not

Usually I just say that I started riding fixed in the winter as after about 5 miles, my dérailleurs would be frozen and brakes were pretty much useless. Plus I felt safer going further out into the middle of nowhere when sub zero F temps hit knowing that I had much less stuff to break/freeze up... then ended up sticking with the setup for the rest of the year.
Or I just tell them that it is a Zen thing and they will just not understand, so STFU.

I just say "I don't know" pretty carelessly and their steam usually cools off as they understand that they won't get an enthusiastic answer.

Tell them its not about pedaling all the time, its about the overall feel of the fixed ride. Let them try you fixed gear bike (in a controled envioronment like a parking lot or park) so they can see for themselves. Almost anyone can ride a bike with brakes and freewheel, riding a fixed gear well is special skill and like all things that require sill and practice, it comes with a reward.
Fixed gear to me (after many years or riding road and mountain bike) bring me back to the simple days of riding BMX as kid. Simple machines often provide the purest and most rewarding rides.
