I'd read in the past that there was a restaurant ban on trans fats law enacted last year and just passed through San Fran the other day and saw a "known to cause cancer sign" on the wall of the Burger King in the San Fran airport.

Were some restaurants exempt like the fast food joints or do they have to post the warning sign or what?

Curious because I've spent most of the last 13 years in Japan and lived in CA a few years ago for a couple years.

Just spent three weeks in the States and had forgotten about the typical American restaurant thing. Just barraged by restaurants and commercials.

The no trans fat law went into effect on Jan. 1st and AFAIK there's no exemption for any type of restaurant. Burger King and most other fast food places have been trans fat free for some time already. Bakeries have another year before they need to comply.

The 'known to cause cancer' sign is probably needed since some of their foods use grilled meat. Grilling is known to create a number of carcinogens in small quantities. Trans fats aren't good for your arteries, but I don't think they're included in the carcinogen list.

Thanks. Was just curious. CA usually paves the way for this kind of stuff and it's nice to see some positive steps being taken.

It's all good that maybe fries won't be fried in trans fat oils but fries are still fries.

There's so much smoke and mirrors in food labeling that it isn't even funny.
