I'm thinking about getting these for my new wheel set. Is it ok to use a front brake with one of these rims? i skid for the most part but i like to have a brake for emergencies

OK? As in what sense? There are all sorts of ill-advised set-ups on this forum that are "OK" in the cosmic sense. I would not run a "nice" non-machined front with a brake, but I am sure there are others who have no issue with it. Eventually the annodizing will wear off if you actually use the brake. But you already knew that.

I used to have a brake on my mavic ellipses. it has a little bit of a machined surface. But the paint will just wear off. it will be fine.

i know the anodizing will wear off, i was more worried about if the structure of the rim was strong enough to handle a brake

no your rim will with out a doubt implode from brake usage.....in a bladed fashion that will certainly cut you up worse then a spinergy..lol

the ellipses have a braking surface.

you can just barely see the braking surface. Man, I destroyed those wheels though. You can see tons of dents. hahaha.

Did a Janky setup on my Leader.

Mavic Ellipse in the rear and a cheapo Forte Titan in the font.
The machined Titan matches up pretty well with the Ellipse, the bladed spokes and hubs look similar.


But you prolly want that all black look right?
Well youll be able to brake somewhat,
not very well in the wet and youd ruin the finish on a expensive front wheel.

another question about these rims, im running sugino 75 cranks and BB, will the chainline be fine with this setup?

If I remember it might be a bit off but it should be fine. Most people I knew riding ellipses had outboard cranks

anyway track hubs to work with the forte rear?

that would be a sweet, since the forte wheelset i've only seen come for road bikes. if we could swap out the hub for a track one, it'd be like a budget mavic ellipse set.

The only track hub that would work would be a mavic hub since it's so similar. It could probably possible to use a surly fixxer tho...


According to Performance the wheelset may actually turn out to be a couple grams lighter, if not the same. Not sure of quality though especially fixed
