Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

I forgot what it was like to ride a comfortable bike

Yesterday I road my ss uptown to spend the night at my fathers but instead of riding it back to my house I borrowed my Dad's 1970's Raleigh tourist (5 speed whith drum brakes and a sprung brooks saddle). It kicked ass and oh did I forget to mention the massive 28 inch wheels. Just cruising along on the loop I didn't even care about those club racer types. The bike was used by my dad in the 1970s to tour through Europe and it still is great.

" I didn't even care about those club racer types"

I ride mostly upright. Kinda like sunday-driving on a bike...gives you the 'i could care less about how fast you think you are' outlook.

...yet, when you ARE in the mood, the upright makes it that much sweeter when passing racer-bob.

ding ding.

I don't have my digital camera at the ready so here is a link. The bike is very similar except instead of rod brakes it has sturmy archer drum brakes with a 5 speed rear hub. It also has mountain bars and an aluminum stem and last but not least there is a Bourg en Bress sticker on the rear fender. My dad tricked it out in the erly 80's.
