The hub date had 63-64 before I started looking through catalogue sites. Thanks for the catch, either way it's what I've been looking for.

It did not come with pegs. I got a set of chromed aftermarket clamps.

What is?

This appears to be a Sears & Roebuck bike but I can't tell who actually made it.

Anyone know?

Have any of you replaced the brake levers with something more modern? Mine have a tendency to rattle and squeak. Perhaps something that looks period correct...

This looks like a Puch, Austrian made. I could be wrong, but that's what it looks like.

Are Sears bikes really rare? I passed up one the other day at an online auction, last I saw there were no bids and it was starting at $1. My cousin runs the auction house so for me it's about 1500 miles away but I was tempted to ask her to hold it, or have my other family pick it up for me. Maybe she still has it...

My parents still have a couple Sears bikes from the early '70s. I should have another look a them.

sort of a thread hi-jack, but...anybody need a pair of 26 x 1-3/8" tires,(E.A.3) NOS Bell "street" tread with reflector stripe sidewall, wire bead?
Hit me with a PM and meantime I'll try to take pics and do a proper thread in the For Sale subforum...but this seems like the right place to start.

Does anyone have any experience with these rims?

Weinmann Metal Products Co., LTD

I have heard about the CR-18 rim but have read here that they are much narrower than the stock steel rims. I need 26x1-3/8 590 rims and I was wondering how these would work. Thanks!

Dunno about the Sun CR18's, but a lot of people seem to really like them. I'm using Sun Rhyno Lite rims, which are fairly wide, but I don't know offhand if they come in 26x1-3/8.

Alloy rims will make that All Steel Bicycle more pleasant to ride. And it will stop better in the rain.

You could lighten it with alloy parts. The crank and hubs would lighten it most if they were alloy.

I have Weinman rims on several of my bikes, they are decent quality. I would say on par with the Sun. I think one reason a lot of people go with the Sun are because they are available in the 40 hole drilling needed for the older Raleighs. They are also available in a high polish. FWIW most of the Weinman I have are the ZAC 20 series rims, which are a bit wider than the CR-18.

The CR-18 rims are much narrower than the stock steel rims, but 26 x 1-3/8" tires work just fine on them nonetheless.

I recently became a bike shop employee again. Someone brought in a 1974 ladies' Sports and asked us to overhaul the bottom bracket. These bikes are such a pleasure to work on, provided they're not abused. This one was abused but not beyond hope at all. The BB overhaul went well. I was able to adjust the much-too-tight headset, too. The rear fender gave a lot of trouble. My boss has been a bike mechanic for about 50 years and agrees that the Sports is really the best bike ever. We worked on the rear fender together. For some reason, it is too close to the wheel in the middle of the run, i.e. not at the back end or front end of the fender. The eyelet on the dropout might have been drilled too low. We got it working.

I love knowing what I'm doing with these bikes. They just work, dammit, even with this apparent manufacturing defect. 1974 was not their best year.

@jjhabbs, that's an incredible specimen, and it looks like it's from around 1974. Don't worry; be happy.
