battery wire gauge how thick?

hi everyone i have 48v 1000watt hub motor kit i have read alot recently on here regarding battery wire thickness . i have got 240v extention lead wire which seems to do the job okay but i was wondering if thicker wire would be better and what benifits it would give me over thinner wire. my wire has never overheated so do i need thicker ? regards crimsonsnake.

Depends on how many amps you are running on your bike. I use a 35 amp controller and I use 10 gauge wire on everything. My wire doesn't even get warm. The thicker the wire, the less voltage sag you'll have to the motor. YOu want to get as much as you can out of the battery pack to the motor so you have a lot of power so the thicker the wire the better. Anything over 35 amp, you'll want to go with 6 or 8 gauge wire. You can find out how many amps you are running by using a watt meter on your bike and looking at the peak amps. Or finding out what your max amp is on the controller.
