Touring on Hwy 162 - Good Route or Not?

I'm thinking of doing a Chico to Ft. Bragg bike ride, perhaps at the end of the summer. Hwy 162 is pretty windy, and therefore is not much used. Hwy 20 is usually the route people take from the valley over to Ft. Bragg so I figured 162 would be a better route. Has anyone here taken that route, or one like it over the coastal range?

I'm completely new to touring as well, so any tips or guides you could point me too would also be helpful and very much appreciated. Thanks!
