I'm a complete newbie, looking for ideas/suggestions for a beginner bike.
I live in Sperryville, Va., planning to ride around town and in the Shenandoah mountains.

Welcome to the gang! I'd stick with a local quality bike shop since you'll end up with better equipment and it really helps when you're riding in hilly terrain. A light weight bike that shifts smoothly will make all the difference in the world and you'll end up riding lots more to boot!!

Trek, Giant and just about every other manufacturer have great entry-level mountain bikes. Post some of your potential ideas and I'm sure you'll get plenty of opinions and advice. Welcome to the forums. This is probably the best forum on the web, in my opinion.
