Andre Griepel showed himself at the base of the final climb on Stage 17, so maybe (with everybody else gone home) he's feeling good for this stage. He needs to do something.

Griepel better win this one. Hell, there shouldn't be anyone to really challenge him. Otherwise he really needs to STFU in the fued with Cav.
I'm picking a breakaway winner. With the other big sprinters out, I don't think Columbia is going to get any help controlling a breakaway. They haven't looked as strong as they have in the past. I don't see Garmin pulling either. The GC contender teams will only help to control if someone in the break becomes a potential overall threat. I'm going with Pozzato in the breakaway for the win. Plus, I need the wildcard points on my fantasy team.

Yeah, not a thrilling stage, but that is quite a fabulous road they're riding on.

Well, I was hoping things might get exciting with a little rain. Definitely looks like the boys are taking it easy before the big mountains to come. Yawn.

They're leaving it pretty late.

At last, Greipel, and not with much of a train either.

I could say something about blind hogs and acorns, but I'll refrain.

Yeah, you can say "finally", but it was a pretty dominating finish, and off of someone else's train. Too bad Farrer wasn't still around, that could have been more interesting.

mind you Greipel is used to following Henderson's wheel for a nice leadout.

To me, the most impressive thing about Greipel's win was that he dragged his ass over those mountain stages and was even in the race to win today. I give him props for that. Most of the other top sprinters bailed out a while ago.

If Greipel would have bailed, Columbia would have both no GC rider in contention, and no rider with anything but an outside chance to pick up any stage wins left in the race. No doubt, the sponsor would have liked more out of the Giro than this, but it at least salvages something from the effort beyond using it for training.
