Cost?

Hey all

I just received an older road bike from my friend. Its a Trek 1000. It hasn't been ridden in who know how long. I just got it and know it needs a tune up. Shifting needs work, wheels look pretty true, brakes squeal, but otherwise i'm not a good enough expert to know about the bearings or such.

How much will a tune up cost for it? Should i get a complete overhaul, or just the basic adjustments?

Thanks

do the wheels seem to spin freely? does the headset feel smooth when you turn the handlebar from side to side? If so, you might be able to get by with a little DIY.

the cost of a tune up will depend on how thorough it is, I think my LBS charges somewhere around $70 to adjust cables, lubricate everything, etc. not includng replacement parts (new brake pads, chain, cables?) Not certain on that though, I've never had them do that kind of stuff for me.

See if you can find a book about bike repairs, you can tinker with it yourself & it will be a lot cheaper than a tune up!

yea, the wheels spin nice and smooth. overall i think its in good condition.(i think it was kept indoors). I honestly dont see much wrong with it, i just dont wanna go on a ride then have something brake thats stupid.

I would replace the cables, housings and brake pads and go ride it. Check out Park Tool's website for instructions.

tune ups around here are about $45-60. Complete overhauls are $125+ depending on shop. You probably only need a tune up, maybe new cables.

DIY is great if you have the tools/ability. If the bike fits you good, and is in pretty nice shape, A complete overhaul might just be worth it. If its in real good shape, a complete overhaul would pretty much make it a new bike, and that would be an inexpensive yet quality bike...

If it doesn't fit you, its not even worth putting money into, to be honest.

I would fill the tires, make sure the brakes stop the bike, see that the headset is not loose then ride it to see if everything works correctly. It looks pretty nice and well kept.
