Lugged Frameset <500$

Is there anywhere to buy a new, lugged frameset for under 500$? I've been looking on eBay for old track framesets and rarely do they ever pop up for under 700$. If there's any framebuilders I should know of that do this type of thing that would be great.

It's the method of joining the frame tubes. The tubes are inserted into sockets called lugs and the joints are effectively glued together by brazing. This is the old way of making steel frames and modern steel frames are typically TIG welded together. Lugged frames are preferred for cosmetic reasons, and are not in any way superior functionally to TIG welded frames.

Traitor has one at $499, but it has cable stops for a rear brake. They also have a fillet brazed frame without any stops, though it costs more.

Lugs and powder coating do not go well together. Also, the geo is whacked on those Leaders. I would likely be on a 51-- and I normally ride a 57- 58.

The nickel BI frame-set is tops on my list for my next build.
Besides the rear cable stops, and questionable quality headset ... someone talk me out of this frame.
Seems like a great value to me, besides being unique and beautiful.

Same frame/fork as my Premium Brew (and the Fuji OBEY except it has added cable stops and is drilled for brakes). The headset is wonky but the sealed bearings in mine were smooth. I replaced it anyway because I hated looking at it and I have no other black components on my bike.

I love mine and even if I hadn't gotten it from a friend for next to nothing, I'd most likely buy one at some point. Do it!

I've recently been in contact with Brother Cycles. Tho they are London based, they told me they will ship to the US. I think it looks like a nice frameset. They don't have much info on their site so I'm gonna post what they told me here.

- Geometry is track-like 74deg head tube, 60mm bottom bracket drop
I came very close to ordering from them except their sizes run too big for me

I really like the look of that, and it would probably still be under $500 shipped. Plus the odds of locking up next to another one in Wisconsin are pretty low.

I am also impressed with the Leader. That company looks like it has come a long way.

Ummm. That Brother frame-set is the same as the nickle plated one at BI, just black. Non?

Will I notice that the nickle bike is 4130 not 520 like my kilo? Or am I being ridiculous?

One of my roommates just had his 80s ten speed powder coated, and it looks fine. It's not like we're talking about Richard Sachs lugs. The thickness of the finish is less of an issue than I thought it would be, and the lugs look pretty clean.

Most likely not. All those frames look very similar.

That Traitor is beautiful, and functional! But it will only be available "June-July 2010". Which probably means August-September.

The prices had me really excited, but it turns out 280GBP is more like $415, and the uninsured shipping is $117. It still sounds like a good deal. I love the decals.

+1 for the BI/SE/Fuji maxway frame. I also got the frame (only) for almost nothing. Took my dremel to it and sliced those cable stops off and grinded them carefully. A fresh powdercoat covered up any irregularities. Lugs came out fine. Have a chrome straight blade on it now. Can't vouch for the headset as mine didn't come with one but tange threaded headsets aren't too expensive. Love the bike. Doesn't ride like a track frame (which it isn't) but still pretty responsive. Good for a townie or distance. Nice for those on a budget.

Scrod, it's funny how similar our builds are (frame, cranks, wheels, tires). If I kept the black Brooks I originally intended to use they could almost be twins (of another color).

Oh, and the geo on the leader is a bit whack. Why is the TT so long?
