I'm ashamed of myself. I've been saving up to purchase a custom Indy Fab ti Crown Jewel. I've got enough to move on it in the next month. Last night my wife informed me that my oldest son is getting ready to ask the young woman who has his heart to become his bride. I'm thrilled, the two get along so well, and seem to support all the best parts of one another. She is a sweet, kind, hard working and sensitive young woman. I really couldn't be happier. Then my wife said, "You know your bike money will have to go toward the wedding gift." My first thought after that comment was, "Oh, man. Couldn't they wait a year?" What is wrong with me?

Whats wrong with what you thought. Its not like you want right out and bought the bike. Theres nothing wrong with you feeling a little bummed out that you will have to wait on the bike. You like his wife to be and hes happy thats what counts. Good luck to your son and wife to be in their future.

Well it is bike money so you should obviously buy them a tandem!

My bike money was discovered by my son who dipped into it to the tune of $360 for feeding his friends pizza, buying stuff, etc. After confessing he paid it back by buying food for the household. Thus my bike money did not buy me anything remotely associated to cycling.

Oh - you are truly blessed by your son's choice - I pray my children succeed in the same manner.

When my oldest son got married in 1990 I had money set aside for a new bike.
Big wedding = $1600 for liquor = goodbye bike.

Got the bike a year later (Trek 1500), still have it; son is now divorced. That marriage, however, did yield three wonderful grandchildren aged 18, 18, 16. The twins are in college and the younger girl is finishing her junior year in high school. Turned out to be the best money that ever slipped through my fingers.

It's partly that you know if your wife had saved up the same money for a fur coat or something equally lame, that even if you had to pay for the whole wedding, that that money would be untouched. Of course, because it's yours, it's now gone.

Wasn't going to put it that way but I agree.

I had two daughters marry in the same year-so I bought the last bike in December 07- first marriage in Jan 08- second in September 08. Their weddings got cut down to the size of my bank balance. Put it this way- neither wedding cost as much as the bike.

Come off it- Bikes are important. The son must know your priorities so just tell him that you are spending his inhertitance before he can get his sticky little hands on it- He'll understand- But the wife may not.

Well, that's your wife's idea.... At least it's not a daughter getting married, then you would be really broke. Speaking as a child-free, divorced man, I'd go for the bike.

How many bikes do you have? If none of them are as nice as the IF, then buy it. Take a small loan for the wedding gift, it's the American way.
