Hey,

Been reading through the forums a bit and thought I'd join. I'm super excited to keep reading and perhaps share some thoughts. I'm riding in nyc, brooklyn. Just started last month after a couple of years of not riding. I got a trek 7.3 fx. Just wanted to say hi and hope everything is well for everyone.

I welcome any hints/tips/tricks/advice/routes anyone wants to share. I don't have much sites for routes. I been fiddling with google maps for bike routes but I can tell its still beta. Not in any club either, just ride with friends and sometimes through prospect park.

Google isn't bad with it's biking directions, not great either, but hey what can one expect? I can recommend a few sources for routes. First, you'll have to work your way into traffic--it doesn't happen overnight. The route you may ultimately take in the beginning may be longer, but safer. The Williamsburg and the Manhattan Bridges are the most bike friendly. The former is the best and my personal favorite. The Brooklyn Bridge is best left to walkers--it is narrow, packed with tourists, and has a lot of wood planking that isn't very satisfying to ride on. The DOT has a site, like Google's that helps you plot a route: https://www.nyc.gov/html/dot/html/bicyclists/bikemaps.shtml. I also write about this on my blog. Ultimately you should sit down with a map, consider your level of comfort with traffic, and plan accordingly. Here is a link to the NYC Bike Map: https://www.nycbikemaps.com/.

Thanks a lot for the information. Working my way into traffic has definitely not happened yet lol. I'll keep an eye on your blog. Seems like have much exploring to do. Commuting with a bike is definitely a new perspective on the city.
