i am 5 feet, 9 and 1/3 inches tall without shoes. 32 and 1/3 inches cycling inseam without shoes. i'm chosing between 15.5" and 17.5". i care for ergonomic fit and not racer's posture. perfect fit is very important for me. sadly its tougher to fit me since i'm out of shape at 218 lbs (hopefully new bike will change that ). your advice will be greatly appreciated. thanks.

Take each size for a ride & stick with the one that feels better. I would think the 17.5" would be a perfect fit, since I'm just short of 5'11 & 18" is my preference. You could also find a LBS that offers the Specialized BG FIT Service. I don't know if that would be practical for everyone though..there's only one in Georgia & I happen to live 10 minutes from it. Maybe where you live has more options though.

interesting...i've never heard of that before so i checked it out

i have a specialized dealer 3 minutes from my house...i'll ask them about the service...and then decide between the trek 6000 and comparable rockhopper model...see what's got the better fitting geometry

Another thing I should have mentioned is that the BG Fit deal is absolute top of the line bike-fitting. And it's probably pretty expensive...I'm really not sure about cost. If you're just getting into mountain biking, it's not really necessary--any non box-store dealer can help you decide on what size frame you need & help you with the adjustments. The owner of my LBS simply looked at me & adjusted the bike seat to the exact right height to text ride some bikes. And he (the BG Fit certified owner) told me exactly what I told you: test ride them both & buy the one that feels better. So if you have a Trek dealer nearby, that may actually be the better place to start.

I'm just around 5'6" and ride a Trek D4300. It's a 16" frame. I'd imagine you'd want a longer bike than that. The best way to tell of course is to ride them both.

how's the stand over for your mountain bike
my boys brush the TT on my hybrid which has SO of 75.4. i can comfortably straddle when resting. the 17.5" trek has a 76.2 cm SO + tires fatter than 700c. seems to cut it close but i'll give it a try. thanks!

I am 5'9 (33 inch inseam and ride a 19"). I like the longer top tube that the 19" provides. I hate being squenched up on a bike. I do not do super technical off roading on it just normal XC stuff. The longer frame shines if you mix any pavement riding in with the dirt.
If I was going to be doing steeper decents or drop offs I would go to the next smaller size.

Its Freakin HammerTime!!!
5'9 and ride 17.5 and I COULD ride a 18.5 but I like to be able to throw the bike around a little more.
stick with the 17.5

thanks guys. my prior bike was a trek 7.2 fx 17.5" with a TT of 55 cm just like the 15.5" 6000. the TT of the 17.5" 6000 is 4 cm longer. this is why i was unsure of which one to go with. i assume the difference in sizing is due to the difference in fit between a hybrid and a mtn bike (mtn is less upright and more aggressive i presume).
thanks for the "general" guideline of 17.5" as the way to go. definitely, i will try out both sizes in person and see which one feels best because we're all unique. i'm pretty sure i'll go with the 17.5" too.
