They keep saying he has never crashed in the Tour before....didn't he go down when his bars caught a bag/purse strap or something?

yeah, he caught a musset I think. And then he crashed twice within about 30 seconds after that when his cleat or pedal or something broke.

But aside from the incidents in 2003, did he ever crash?

This is karma.
For all 7 tours LA avoided mishaps that hurt many of his rivals. He almost never crashed or flatted at a bad time. Luck smiled on him continually.
It seems like that lucky streak has come to an abrupt end.
The truly tragic thing is that the Lanfanboys will use it as an excuse as to why he didn't win this time around.

Great riding by Astana. The team got no credit coming into this.

one by one they disappear off the back. Astana is killing it. I'd like to see an attack by Andy, but I doubt anyone attacks today. Looks like they're just gonna roll up to the top together.

Navarro is killing it. Really impressive pace setting.

wow. Awesome. That's not what I was expecting to see at all. Especially seeing Contador put into some trouble by Andy. Surprising that he couldn't hang with that (or didn't want to possibly?).

Glad to see Cadel in yellow, but a little bummed that he couldn't quite run with the big attacks at the end. At least he didn't blow up like Wiggo.
C'est la vie, Lance.

If the rest of the climbing stages are this good, we're in for some great racing over the next two weeks.
Lance just went back and back and back. Seems like he just gave up after that 2nd crash.

Andy has 41 seconds on Contador. That's a long time considering Schleck looked stronger today. I'd love to see Andy atop the podium.

Assuming he can keep pressing a slight advantage in the mountains (an assumption that could easily prove wrong), how much time does he need over AC to not lose the tour on the final TT?

Phil's such an idiot...
"they're climbing up Alpe d' Huez..."
"Armstrong loses time through no fault of his own" (then Armstrong gives an interview saying he clipped his pedal and lost the front wheel)
Paul identifies LL Cool Sanchez getting dropped then Phil jumps in 3 minutes later on a new camera shot and exclaims "Sanchez has just been dropped!"
I should have turned off the sound and listened to Eurosport and just watched the VS. HD picture.
Hey Sky....was he worth it?
Pretty sad watching that, regardless of anyone's opinion of the guy. It reminds me of this:
