Can I use a Shimano 105, Triple Left shifter with a double crank?
I'm referring to a late model 105. I know that with older triple STI shifters, like RSX and 105, you can set up the triple shifter to work perfectly with a double crank. I've done it several times. However, a freind recently toasted a late model Tiagra triple when using it with a double compact crank. It was a Trek and it came that way from the factory. The bike shop that repaired it said this shifter was not made to work with that crank and they had seen this several times before. BTW, this happened within one year of purchase, still under warranty.
I've got a 06 Giant OCR-C3 with 105 triple left (10 speed). I'm seriously thinking of going from a triple to a compact double. The question is, will this shifter also have problems working with a double or is the problem limited to Tiagra 9 speed left?

The shifter was toasted due to user error, not that the shifter wasn't designed to work with a double. Apparently, so many users made this same error with 105 10 speed shifters that Shimano stopped selling them as double/triple compatible and went back to separate double and triple versions. What your friend, and many others like him, did was attempt to shift past the high stop screw. Due to the somewhat delicate nature of brifters and their ratcheting mechanism, this was enough to break some internal component. If you want to avoid taking this risk, set up the shifter to use the positions intended for a triple's middle and big ring as opposed to the inner and middle ring (Shimano's recommended installation). You'll be able to overshift going down but this will only leave you with a very loose shift cable. Attempting to overshift up will have you pressing against the shifter's internal stops instead of stressing the ratcheting mechansim.
