Hello, new rider!

Hey everyone, my car broke down recently and I got a great mountain bike, and have been biking 6 miles to work everyday. The bike I got is a Voodoo, and it came with an electronic counter, which tells what gear it's in, how fast i'm going, and how far i've gone, in either standard or metric. I've only seen these counters on road bikes, but i'm liking the fact it's on a mountan bike. Since i'm mostly on the road, I got inverted tread tires, which makes my ride smoother. Because I'm new to this, i hope folks can give me some advice on how to improve my bike and safety stuff. Thanks!
