I have two questions on my shifting and cassette.

I just replaced the chain and now have a few hundred miles on it with a new cassette. However, I took my racing wheel, placed on the bike, and the chain skips in a few of the sprockets even though this cassette probably has only a few hundred miles on it and its a lighter campy 9 speed version.

Question - Once the chain gets a little older do you think the racing cassette will eventually work smoothly?

Second question - Chain is in large cog on rear wheel (going up hill 23 tooth) and it at times ghost shifts into second cassette (21 tooth) - Should I just adjust the rear cable adjuster?

Both wheels are exact, its either derailler or cassette not matching the chain but hoping the chain wears so it will work?

The cassette sits in a slightly differnt position on your racing wheel. Skipping could be fixed either by adjusting tension when you swap wheels or putting a shim behind on one of the wheels so shifter is aligned the same with both wheels.

yes, make sure the rear derailer is adjusted so the pulley-wheel is properly in line with the sprockets on the racing wheel, before judging the shifting. As AndrewP said, odds are the shifting adjustment is just off.

it is possible that the chain and your old cassette are just worn-out, with chain stretch and thus worn-down teeth on the cassette (shark-fin shape). but usually the skipping in this case will result from pairing a new chain with a worn-down cassette, not the other way around.

andrew, both wheels are set up to swap very easily. the racing wheel cassette is not as new as the chain and newer cassette. I want to see if the older cassette will eventually work

this response does not make it clear that the cassette is spaced at exactly the same distance from the locknut on both wheels. is it?

hi tall,

all is the same, i usually interchange my wheels for training and racing. however, i didnt have many miles on the racing lighter cassette. I figured it wouldn't necessarily skip with a new chain but it did bummer the ghost shift is a pain rear cable adjuster?
