rear derailleur jumping gears while upshifting... also not shifting into 7...

Hey,

1995 Specialized Hardrock
New SHIMANO ST-EF50 SHIFT/BRAKE LEVER
Stock Shimano SIS rear derailleur
7 spd cassette

The problem:

I am installing the new shift/brake levers on my bike. The front derailleur shifter and both brake levers installed and are working perfectly. All gears, both upshifting and downshifting, on the rear shifter work fine when on the stand. I get on the bike outside though and it starts fine. Goes 1-2-3 no problem, doesn't shift to 4. I upshift to 5 where it skips 4 from 3 to 5. Goes 5-6 no problem. And finally will shift from 6-7 just fine about half of the time. The other half of the time it won't go into 7. It will downshift through all 7, including 4 just fine!

Is this an adjustment issue or a damaged part issue?

I went through the install procedure on the Park website and it appears as if everything is fine. Like I said, all shifting works perfect on stand.

Help!! Thanks

Jake

Maybe the rear derailleur is not in alignment.

I would check the alignment w/a hanger alignment gauge. I'm not saying alignment is the problem, but the symptoms seem right, and alignment is usually the first thing I check anyway.
