I understand how to attach a photo - thanks.

I'm wondering how some users are able to show 2 or 3 "thumbnails" under their posts and not in the body - are these just attached photos that are sized too large and the site automatically reduces them?

Yes, you attach half a dozen images to a single post, if the image is larger then 125 x 125, the site will automagicly thumbnail them for you.
