Holy crap, I've been rolling red lights when they change for no reason and there's obviously no cars, I better stop.

Out of curiosity, what were the circumstances? A roll through or blow through? Good or bad visibility? Any other vehicles at the intersection at the time? Etc..

Almost home and stopped at a stop sign, one foot down, looked around and there was a cop right behind me. I did not see him, usually if no cars i just ride through.

The OC Register has an article today in the back of the sports section about how the Orange County Wheelman are trying to get riders to comply with all traffic rules, especially stopping at stop signs. They suggest clubs sanction members who do not comply. This is all in response to a huge number of cycling deaths this year. Basically riders are treated the same as drivers by the police when it comes to fines, but we don't get any rights to the traffic lanes.

Rolling through the red light and leaving your buddies behind so you can reach the taco truck at the corner of Alvarado and Montana before them:

priceless...

All of us should come to a complete stop at stop signs and red lights, for our own safety, right? Getting a ticket for a violation of this is a deterrent, right? However, a fine of $468 isn't a deterrent so much as a money grabbing tax by another name. Grrrr. Okay, I will calm down before this thread is sent to A&S.

Probably none of those deaths were from rolling a stop sign. Despite the law, it's actually safer for a cyclist to carefully roll a stop sign than stop. On a rolling stop you have more control and can get across more quickly.

Maybe some day Caly will join the 21st century and allow cyclists to treat stop signs as yield signs, and red lights as stop signs (especially since most stoplights do not have their sensors set to detect bicycles.)

I got stung for blowing a stop sign on Mulholland Highway, for $150 worth. I slowed from 30 to 20mph, but then this is out in the sticks, and I had view of the cross street for quarter mile in both directions.

Looks like OC is a lot more expensive living.

BTW, when getting stung, ask officer not to put your driver license number on the ticket, that way you don't get this on your driving record. When I'm on the bike I carry a copy of my driver license with the number blotted out. This is legal, since I'm not on a motor vehicle.

If the fine taught the lesson that it is not okay to ignore a stop sign, then it is not outlandish.

Bicycle violations NEVER go on your DRIVING record, in California. Doesn't matter d/l number or not.

That $468 fine reminds me of the racket being run in the city of Bell by Rizzo and his pals.

My friend, I so wish you were correct. My stop sign violation on Mulholland DID go on my driving record as a moving violation. If you are right, then something went wrong here. What for me to do????

Thanks for the sarcastic remark. Did I say anything about anything not making mistakes? Need not reply further as it doesn't apply to this topic.
