to face or not to face my bb??
I have a surly cc and am about to put on some ultegra 6600 compact cranks(cup and bearing style). I heard that I should face my bottom bracket before I put on this type of crank. Do I really need to do this or is it only important for older frames?
thanks

I believe it's only unnecessary for cartridge-style bottom brackets, where the spindle is fixed relative to the cups, though it is still a good idea. It is necessary for older cup-and-cone and newer external BBs. Having the cups and spindle not perfectly perpendicular can lead to premature bearing wear and failure.

Yes... you want to insure that the bb is faced perfectly.
You would expect this from Surly but it is wise to make sure that it was done properly and if anything, you want to check it to ensure that things are at spec.

My Cross Check came with a fair bit of paint overspray on the bb shell faces and even a bit in the threads so having the shop face the shell and chase the threads is a good idea for any bottom bracket that's alignment sensitive, particularly an external cup type.
I just cleaned the paint off of mine with a little acetone and had no other problems since I installed a Shimano square taper cartridge.
