So after about 2 weeks of waiting, my shimano PD-M520's are here. They are very pretty

Of course my immediate reaction is *lets put these babies on me bike!* so i run them outside with my allen keys, but lo and behold i need a spanner (wrench) to do it. Okay, not a big deal. Go searching through the tool box for a spanner, can't find any. Greattt, i grab a pair of pliers hopefully that'll do the trick yunno..hold the bike down have a nice grip and voila. No problem right? WRONG. I basically forced all me weight down on the pliers which are far wider than a spanner would be and put a nice gash in my new Hollowtech cranks. $#@%ing fantastic. Not to mention i still can't get them on. I gotta call JasBike to bring me a bloody wrench or something ... bleh

Yes, probably NOT the most intelligent thing i've ever done but desperation can do funny things to the mind. JasBike is on his way over and we're gonna raid VosBike's house and steal a 15mm spanner woowoo.

I got my M520's a week ago and went to my lbs and had them do it in two minutes. I'm enjoying them as we speak

Screw LBS we had JasTank (jasbike he says) do it by hand with a wrench. WOOOOOO~~~~~~

You ordered something and then had your LBS install it? I'm always happy to pay my LBS to do installs of parts I got elsewhere, but I still have to endure a sermon about 'how come I didn't buy it from them?' I try to explain - 'It's because you don't have it. If you did, I would buy it from you. I can't buy something from you that you don't have!' For some reason that is beyond me that doesn't seem to make any sense to them. I'm always happy to pay them to do the labor but they still seem a little P.O.'d that I didn't buy the part from them - even if they don't carry it! (Anyone else ever run into this?)

Juniper oftentimes they can order it for you (infact they will insist on it) and then they can charge you a wonderful premium -- so they will be po'd. Although, putting on clipless pedals was a ***** and a half without a pedal wrench and i already had shoes with the right cleats so that wasn't a problem either.

Yup; that's what I frequently do; have them order it for me. Seems like for whatever reason I can get it sent to my house twice (three times?) as fast as they can get it to the shop. I like to give them the business whenever I can but it doesn't always work out (for example - I can order the part but ... they can't?). One of life's mysteries, I suppose.

Uhoh ran into some trouble, so it looks like the shoes jasbike supplied me (specialized mountainsport 04's or something) have wellgo 98A cleats in them. Why...i don't know. They seem to work entirely fine (i wouldn't really know seeing as how i just started riding clipless), and from what i can tell they are entirely identical to the SH-51 single release shimano cleats that shipped with the pedals. I wonder if its worth the effort lugging it down to the bikeshop to have them extort me to replace it...hmm...

Thoughts?

After un poco de research it looks like the 98A's are meant to be compliant with the SH51 scheme, i.e. they are identical. Fabulous

isnt there a allen on the face of the axle for installing?

Yes, but that is only possible with the higher end shimano pedals -- namely the 540, and 959.

I just busted one of my shimano M520's but my LBS replaced them for free.... just be sure not to over tighten the adjustment screws... or loosen them up too much

you need a 3-inch allen key....there's one on most multitools.

Once you get the right tool, remember the left pedal is reverse threaded.
