Should I worry about this thing that fell off my shifter?

I got a cannondale touring. Looks like the regular cannondale touring 1 bikes. Dont know what year. The silver thing that covers the top of the brake lever fell off. The only thing im concerned about is if water gets in there will that do any harm?

Its that shiny silver cover in this pic with the logo on it.

Yes, the shifter will be completely open to dirt & water, but you can still continue using it. Dirt is the bigger concern as it can "gum up the works" on brifters pretty readily - if it does, a few shots of lube can make things right (there have been numerous threads on the subject of non-working brifters). I would check with a LBS and see if they have a replacement cap.
