stiff Shimano ceramic bush G pulley
The top pulley on my Utegra derailleur was stiff and not wanting to turn compared with the bottom pulley. I took it apart to clean it, and it still doesn't spin freely with a flick of my finger like the bottom one does. I see four indentations on the outer part of the bearing that the sleeve fits into. Do these bearings get lubed, or are they supposed to run dry?

You should reclean them. Unless the bearings are actually cracked it's usually just contamination from crap that causes it to 'seize' like that. Happens frequently on cross bikes that are raced.

I have cleaned it. It doesn't turn as freely as I would have thought. It is not cracked. Do these get lubed, or no?

theres also lateral float it's sposda have , part of the index scheme.
The basic plastic self bushing ed pulleys work fine, dry.

It's clean, there is lateral float. The bottom pulley will rotate one or more revolutions with a flick of the finger. The top one will not.

sounds like you go shopping for new parts.. , I like the sealed bearing pulleys myself , they use a bushing
around a 5mm bolt and the ID of the bearing cartridge slides back and forth.
Tacx an BBB and maybe Velo Orange sources.. I got a pair of Tacx in NL when my Suntour ones got a crack.
Now my tour bike has Carmichael metal and sealed bearing pulleys, make a bit of noise as the plastic ones are quieter.

LBS tells me there is nothing wrong with it. It's a ceramic bushing type, no bearings. The metal dust caps rotate inside the grooves of the rubber seals, slowing it down. Why would they design a component that slows things down? Makes no sense to me.

The upper derailleur pulley doesn't need to spin freely so much as precisely position itself in alignment with the proper cassette cog for crisp index shifting response. I see the lack of free spinning (no slop) as an asset for this part. Go ahead and clean it thoroughly and you can use a thick oil or grease on it (internally).

Thanks masi61. I just put it back together with a drop of chain lube along with a new Ultegra cassette and chain, and took it out for a quick 30 miles. It works great.
