Maybe take a dremel to your sneakers' rubber bottoms and a thin metal plate under the cushion in the shoe? A pair of red Converse clipless high-tops would be awesome!
Seriously though, having something casual and fashionable like that would be cool. Kind of like those sneakers you can buy with roller skate wheels that pop out.

Check out Dan's Comp for clipless shoes. I have a pair of Vans Exacerbate 2 shoes that I like. I rode them when I raced BMX, and they work well with the toe clips I'm riding now on my roadie.

Sweet! Leave it to Vans.
Think my SpeedPlay Frog cleats would work with those? They're the new version of the cleats that are supposedly smaller.

Why not just duct-tape your shoes to the pedals? Like in the movie "Breaking Away".

Actually, I have a friend who attached a pair of cleats to the soles of some combat boots for winter mountainbiking.
I've never done it, but I would expect to have a problem with the example that you gave. Most shoes are made by glueing the upper materials onto a board that becomes the sole. They aren't designed to withstand continually pulling upward on the upper. My bet is that the shoes would quickly come apart.

hmm, are those SPD vans wide-foot friendly? I've had two identical size vans, and one wouldnt fit me, due to how freaking tight it was...but those were jsut regular shoes

Never tried to, but have been accused of doing so.
