Anniversary, and a new experience

A year ago I took an unforced error, a fall off my folder while U turning on a slippy road, probably inadvertently re-clipped while giving a bit more pedal pressure to complete the turn. Broken femur (spiral fracture), which re- broke along with 2 new breaks a couple of weeks later as the rods and pins created some referred pressure lower down the leg.

Heigh, whatever!

Today, one year on, I went out on my own ( my usual weekend rides are 'social') and tried to press on a bit. Did a 90 kms in 3 hours, not overwhelming but maybe a 7 or 8 out of 10 effort rather than my usual 5 or 6. And much as I enjoy the social rides, I was really in the zone and loving it. Calm morning, beautiful sunrise, slight adjustment to my riding position which I should have done years ago. It all felt really good, and I was glad to be able to feel back on form, best ride of the year by far.

Then, I accompanied the spouse to her Yoga class. Never done that before. Wow. This is something I must do more of. There's something about trying to get even halfway into a stretch or a bend that everyone else can just naturally fall into, that makes it quite apparent that repetitive exercise which is all I've ever done, mainly running and cycling, doesn't quite make it.

Oh Yeah. Hurts so good. I think the little elves are going to be all over me with their little hammers tonight, and I'm going to feel it in the morning.

So, rode my age, rode faster and further than I have for a year or more, and found a new activity that I think I'll do a lot.

I hope you had a good day too.

+1 on the yoga! I do a lot of yoga with some weight training mixed in. It really helps with flexibility and core strength. I even bought a dvd entitled "Yoga for Cyclists." However, the intro was so long, I developed a bit of ADD and have yet to watch (or perform) the whole thing. Maybe this winter, when I'm really bored.
And I've run out of good books.

Congrats. All the adversity you experienced makes your accomplishment all the sweeter.

Thank you all for your good wishes, and also for the kindness of those who have wished me well over the last year -

Which has been a year of big change. I always thought of myself as a bit athletic for my age. It's been a good recalibration to be evidently vulnerable.

And as you commented, sweeter to be able to ride happily after all. Every ride, a pleasure.

And, new challenges in store. I've loved my bike for 40 years! I've loved running for longer. That's a greater challenge now. I have done a few mountain trail marathons. I'd love to do another. Now, I hold onto the handrail on a staircase.

So, thanks for your positive wishes. I'm back to ok on the bike, and looking forward to more. And beginning to jog a bit, feeling all the hardware in my leg, but looking forward to being able to run downhill among rocks with a skip and a jump!

All best to all

Why is it that you get a cold or Man-Flu and it keeps you off the bike for a month and you then struggle to get the fitness back and that seems to take months. But something serious- and just face it breaking a leg in the manner you did was serious- and all you want to do is get back on the bike and do it as soon as possible.

You are as bad as DnvrFox in this regard- but I think it is a bit late to tell you to take it easy now.

Just take care of that leg for a few years and you will be fine- Just don't dismount wrongly from the bike and have to do it all again

Not that I can see that happening as once bitten- Twice shy will be your mantra for a while- Well at least 6 months.
