Guerciotti Mystery
Hey Everyone, I'm new to the forums here so point me in the right direction if this thread doesn't fit here.
I've been sitting on an old Guerciotti for the last year an a half and I'm not sure what I should do with it. From what I've seen online I'd say it's an early 70's but I can't find any concrete data on it. The problem I'm finding is that my bike is missing the Guerciotti stamp on the top of the seat stays and the stars on the fork crowns. It does have the star cutout on the bottom bracket and the paint and decals do seem original. I need to find out more about this bike before I decide to restore it original, sell it, or just play with it. Any help would be great!

The decals on early 70's Guerciottis had a squarish font. When they changed to the font on yours, I don't know. But if I had to guess, I'd say yours is mid-70's. The star decal, with its outline, reminds me of the one on my '79. But, unlike my frame, yours doesn't have brazed on cable guides. So it's probably a bit earlier than mine.

Campagnolo shorty dropouts without Portacatena holes, in conjuction with the cables routed over the bottom bracket shell, would point towards 1975-1978. However, it could also be a slightly later , mid-range, Columbus Aelle frame, so check for a 27.2 mm seat post size and the presence of five spiral ridges inside the bottom of the fork's steering tube. If you have these features, then it should be a 1975-1978 Columbus SL model.

hmm... it looks like it's a 26.8mm seat post. I wish it was a 27.2 because I have a Campy super record post that would go nicely with it.

Still a good chance it is Columbus SL. My Italvega is SL and it takes 26.8mm and it has the rifling in the steerer. I am thinking yours is early 70s due to lack of the details you mentioned and missing markings such as the flags on the downtube. BTW, is there a date on the license?

Are there bottle bosses and if so, are they male or female?

So I don't see any spiral edges on the bottom of the steer tube, there are two stamps on the BB. one is a big 61 and the other is SS-54 but the 4 looks weird as if it were stamped twice once forward and then a backwards 4 on top of it. I'm not sure if it's a weird makers stamp or just a messed up 4. I'll put up a picture when I can get better light for a close up. The bottle bosses are standard female. I don't see any markings on the brake bridge... As for the tubing there's a tiny remnant of a gold Columbus sticker.

My mistake, I took off the wheel and looked down the steer tube with a good flashlight and sure enough there are spirals. Very subtle! What can those tell?
