I want to build a wheel set and I am deciding on which spokes to buy and I want them to be at least fairly cheap any recommendations?

CN (CNSpoke)
Stamped with small n inside of capital C , just a capital N or nowdays an "m" with a vertical tail at the start of the m.

for just cheap, any plain gauge spokes in 1.8mm (15ga) or 2.0mm (14ga) from wheelsmith, DT swiss or sapim will serve it's purpose.
If you want to build custom, you might as well buy some good, double butted spokes to build with. The straight gauge you can buy from shops and online aren't worth it, when you consider the price of double butted and their longevity.
If you want just want to learn how to build, buy some ready-made wheels from places like velomine, then disassemble and reassemble them. Much cheaper than trying to learn how to build with parts bought separately.
It's not that I want to discourage you from doing what you want, but I just want to throw out some options, in case you haven't considered them.

You can buy a box of 100 counts DT 2.0 mm Champion for about $54 at Jensenusa. Jensen also sells in quantity of one. My straight gauge 2.0 mm Champion wheels last as long as those with DT double-butted. I often re-use the spokes once the rim is worn out. Another bonus with the 2.0 mm Champion is minimal spoke twist.

Then when your ready, buy yourself 14g double butted spokes to build yourself a nice set of wheels. The superiority of DB spokes easily justifies their price. Also avoid light (15g, or light 14g spokes like DT Revolution) spokes and light rims, since both make wheelbuilding harder and you should walk before trying to run.
Here's a link to a very nicely written piece with lots of advice you'll find useful. Thanks Mike, whoever you are.
