No THAT sounds like fun Mr. Markets!

We went to my favorite Chinese Buffet for lunch Friday, after running my wife to her Dr. appointments. I don't normally watch the people around me eating. But for some reason I did. I'll leave it that it wasn't pretty. Large Polynesian community in the area and there were a couple there. 16/17 year old boy put down 2 plates while I watched (with 2 more already empty before I got there), went back for a fifth as we left... To my own transgressions, I usually ate 2 plates and then desert. I like this place for their Mongolian BBQ. And yes, on rare occasions, 3 plates and desert. I used less noodle, more veg and chose chicken for my one plate... And no desert. It was easier than I expected it to be. (What I really wanted for lunch was that 3/4 pound double garlic burger from a place I want try...)

Well, off to the gym for weights... Yeahaw!

Back, worked shoulders arms and chest. Easy weights, getting used to the exercises I've done before that worked. Figuring out what machines DO what *I'M* used to doing. Did some ab work. Will give the Ab Flexor machine a chance. Doesn't feel natural. There really is a six pack under this keg... I was looking for a leg press that mimicked the Total Gym approach. Nothing. The closest thing, won't let me hurt myself. I can't get it deep enough to reach my ROM. It MIGHT let me get 125*... My wife, improved a bit with the bike. And then I worked her out in the pool. Made her walk backwards and sideways in the pool and then had her do squats. Now of course, I did all that too...

On my bike after bit...

30 minutes on my bike this evening. Had a friend (former racer bud) talked with me through 20 minutes of that ride! Felt good. My other friend that just bought a bike to ride with me, did his first ride in over 10 years. He is going to hurt tomorrow though. Gotta get ready for the streets and trails myself...

So a little more show and tell. The only pic I have of me on a bike back when I was getting in shape...

Sept of 90 I believe... I'd snagged this bike a few weeks before and hadn't built it up just yet. I snapped the bars the day before this century ride (I did 25 miles with some friends), and the chromes were all I had... And yes, I tried to put a camera on the bike. None of my shots that day worked out... I was about 220 in this shot and obviously had some spare tire left... This bike became my favorite, and is the roadie I kept. Will likely become a single speed this summer. Its a 88 or 89 KHS Fiero, 61cm. I ditched the chromed fork too, but it has always been a 27" wheeled bike.

Fast forward to Sept of 94...

I'm on the left in the bike t-shirt, some friends and I tackled Mount Fuji in Japan... Mt Fuji won. I had too much camera gear with me, too much food, not enough water and NO sunscreen... About 215 or so. I'm 6'3", the big guy was a well known bouncer for a while in Hawaii, about 6'5".

In the gym, Elliptical, weights, abs, and the pool. Leaving the gym, stepped on the scales. 291.8... It weighs about 2 pounds heavier than mine at home. Since my scale at home said 303 the day I got home from surgery, I'm at about 12 pounds lost...

Zjrog, I too have also lost weight since my TKR. Went in at 257. Less than three weeks ago. Now I'm at 246, and my shorts are falling off. I think I can contribute the weight loss from not having a single alcoholic drink since before the surgery. I didn't feel mixing beer with blood thinners and pain meds was a good idea. Funny thing is I haven't even had the desire for an adult beverage. I do enjoy good beer. Don't drink a whole lot anyway, but the stuff must be pretty darn fattening. I hit 110 deg yesterday on the cpm. The pt gal said that was going to be her goal for me at the end of the week. So thats good. She gave me a Resistance workout yesterday that put me on the couch for the rest of the day. Man was that leg sore and tired. Mostly tired like a limp noodle. I think I'm over the fear of not getting to a desirable ROM. It's going to happen,I just have to be patient. To back up a few threads, Peter is right about the pain meds. I assume most people would benefit during your work outs if your not in pain. He's totally right about that, and how all bodies are not the same, and we all heal different. Once I got my noggin around that it's been working out way better.

Good thing, not mixing meds and alcohol... I had my first beer since surgery on New Years Eve. None since. I keep my beer fridge pretty well stocked with good beer. PLenty of empty calories for certain, but some darned tasty calories at that! I never really feel like I need an adult beverage, but I sure do enjoy a cold brew almost anytime.

Again, let the CPM machine do the work for you. And in therapy at home, I was moved on to outpatient therapy at 110*. You are doing fine. Just keep up on the meds, as you found, getting behind sucks. And you'll know when its time to quit them too. While I was always happy to see my PT friend leave, I was equally looking forward to her next visit. After spending a good portion of the day recovering. Noodle sounds about right because for a couple hours after each visit my entire leg was spent... Just wait till you get to the outpatient therapy!!!

So what knee did you get brotherman? Whats its limit? Does your home PT have a good outpatient PT they recommend?

I had the left one done. Limits, well I walked to the mailbox and back today(150 yds) without using the cane. I had it with me just in case. I also got in my truck and was able to turn it around and back into my driveway. I can support all of my weight on it. Deg wise, not really sure. I know I'm not 0 yet,but ext is around 110. They haven't measured it since day one. I'm curious. It's really starting to bend easier every day. I think the walk was good for it. I have a good PT guy set up for Monday. I used him on the other knee that had a broken tibia plateau. With 6 screws and a steel plate. I think I will be able to drive to PT. That will be nice.

I should have been more clear. What brand and model knee did you get? Mine was the Stryker Triathlon in a size 6 (size 8 is the biggest they normally produce, but they have made larger...).

Walking is good if your PT has had you out. Mine did before it snowed... I saw my lady friend PT at the gym yesterday, told her she's still in my head reminding me to keep my feet pointed straight when walking. Getting in my truck wasn't so bad, but getting in my Jeep was a bit tougher. Smaller door opening!

As Peter will say, do your quads. Contract that quad muscle everytime you think about. By flexing that muscle, as my PT says, you'll pull that kneecap and that helps get your zero. But thats just one small part. As for the flexion, don't sweat it. if your home PT is happy, then be happy. And if you have stairs, remember, good leg up, bad leg down... Your PT will work with you on this. And do any and all exercises assigned. Do as many as you can.

Talking with someone last night, looks like Salt Lake City had its first robotically performed knee replacement recently. SHe is waiting for this procedure to be more mainstream. Supposedly, further minimizes soft tissue damage, and minimizes bone resurfacing. Said to cut recovery time as well. Interesting.

The only thing I didn't know about my new knee going into the surgery, was what size I got. They weren't certain, so they did an xray with a measuring device to make sure I got what I needed. My surgeon got into a knee and found the guy was abnormally large. So much so, they biggest the had in stock was WAY too small.

How hard is it to do that? I've been severely "toe out" all my life.

I'm not severely toe out, but as my friend called it, my "Seaman's Swagger", while good for stability on a moving platform can also cause knee issues... Good posture and all are improved with keeping the toes pointed forward. As much as possible. Now, in therapy having the big rubber band around my ankles and walking sideways, with a little squat, toe orientation is much guided by hip rotation as anything else. So I didn't get yelled at that much.

Enrolled myself in a spin class for old farts because I've been a bit house-bound lately (voluntarily not driving). The instructor was quick to point out that my form sucked. I've lost quite a bit of ROM in Leftie, so my orthopedic surgeon wrote a script for PT. I meet with the therapist tomorrow afternoon to see what can be done to improve it. Looks like it's going to be a rough winter.

Yesterday and today during PT at home I was able to turn 360 Deg both forward and back wards on my recumbent Nordictrack bike. Slow and the seat is almost all the way back yes, but I can do it for 15 min. It's a great stretch and gives me hope that someday I will be riding my beloved Jamis 2 Commuter. Thats motivation right there. My ROM has increased a good deal. The PT guy is a bicyclist also and when I did the 360's I think he was as happy as I was. He also has me doing a realistic workout instead of a plan that I would not stay with. I want to do this. It's funny how impotent a goal is to keep you going. Some people would that riding a regular bicycle isn't much of one, but it has been my motivation through all of my surgery's. Something so basic as a bicycle. The thing is I find it to be one of the most important inventions of all times, and the whole bicycle thing has intrigued me since I first learned how to ride.

I hope you meant important, not impotent... BIG difference in meanings, near polar opposites...

Good for you! Getting over the top rolling forwards was such a PAIN but such a BIG reward in and of itself on the bike... When I had the most pain in therapy, a particular cycling event in my past was my "happy place".

I checked in with the physical therapist and after a brief history, got down to assessing the knee(s). Leftie's bend was measured at 93* and Pancho's was 102*. I was sent to the pool and did a therapy session, then we went to the exercise bike after I changed out of my swimsuit.

I was asked to pedal backward. The pedals glided effortlessly. I looked down at the cranks. I then realized they are not the same length as the spin bikes (or my df for that matter). I'm going to take measurements on Monday at my next class... The five minutes on the bike flew by as I chatted with the therapist, and we adjourned to the anteroom for stretching, bending and measuring - the pain and torture aspect part of PT. Leftie was now bending at 103* and Pancho was 108*. I was given some stretches to do at home and set the next appointment for Tuesday.

Leftie's feeling a little stiff today, with minimal pain. Think I'll take a couple of ibu...

My therapist had me slide the seat forward frequently during a 15 minute ride. That forced me to bend. After he saw *I* would slide the seat myself, he let do it the rest of the time I was in therapy... As soon as I would get comfortable, I'd slide forward an inch or so at a time... The next thing to help with bending was his Total Gym. I got good and deep on that, as deep as I could do. 3 sets of 10 all through therapy. Only difference was how deep I went and how long I stayed. In the last weeks it actually felt good settling into it and getting a bit more. I amost wish I had my own Total Gym... I should start watching for one at the thrift store...

I really hope you get a lot more ROM out of therapy Judy. My therapist was nice enough to say I can come in whenever I feel the need just to bend. He thinks I'll do just fine on my own though and won't need to come back to see him at all. Ice might not be a bad idea on those knees tonight...

Going to the gym, I've been cleared to add weight for leg presses, not much though. STILL hate the Elliptical. And not comfy with the ab work yet. I have probably my last appointment for some time with my surgeon next Friday. I'm sure he will be very happy. Everyone around me is, for certain... Took the wife to see one of her docs today. The doc even commented on how well I was doing, when she asked about my ROM, she was very surprised....

Just got back from the gym.Didn't do as much as I wanted, my wife wasn't feeling well. Will go by myself in the morning.

This Monday will be 12 weeks post surgery. So the first photo you've seen, at 1 week post...

This was at the very beginning of all this.

And this is today, a couple days shy of 12 weeks. As measured with my knee straight, the scar is 8" long. I know, it doesn't look as swollen still as it really is.

Its been a really fun ride folks. Appreciate the nice comments, the advice, the stories and of course, the inspiration, and the chance to share with you folks. Oh no, I'm not done. I'm not ending this thread. Not by any measure.

Oh no, this ride is just beginning!

Your incision site healed really well! It looks great.

I'm hoping for better ROM, too. The therapist is optimistic -- we're not working through much pain. Because of the assessment process, we didn't make it to the gym floor on Thursday. We'll see what Tuesday brings. I'll tell you that the back of my thighs are rebelling today. I would have expected my quads to be screaming at me.

Zjrog, I am evidently not loquacious enough to reply to your PM yet.

Yup, I turn 56 in March, I had my first knee replacement when I was 49, it was the result of being fat, active and having arthritis. That replacement was a total turn around for me since I had let it get so bad that I worn a groove into the bottom bone and was walking with a cane. This one was a bit different, I swore that that I wouldn't wait when the other one started to go and I didn't, as soon as the Dr. told me to start considering it, I pulled the trigger, that was on October 28th. I have had an easier time with this one gaining ROM and I stopped PT after 6 weeks with 135, which was about 10 degrees better than my first one (which eventually hit 140 with exercise). The difference between the two has been swelling, this one will swell if I look at it wrong, while the first one I only had that problem only if I over did it. Swelling should start disappearing after the second month, and I was hitting my third month and still having issues, so i went and saw my Dr. this week and he checked everything out and told me to give it another month and see if it got better. Funny thing is, since my appointment on Tuesday, the swelling has gone down more than it has in quite a while and I am able to quite a bit more exercise without a problem, maybe i have turned the corner, which is good because I have our normal spring vacation of hiking down in So. Ut coming up in April and I need to get my legs in shape.

This weather has been driving me crazy, I don't have a trainer and I just can't get excited about my stationary bike, I threatened my wife with taking off to St. George for a couple of days just so I could ride my bike, it was in the mid 60's this week. I normally snow shoe during the winter, but that hasn't been an option with the swelling, maybe if the knee behaves for another couple of weeks, I will break them out and see how it feels. This has been a hard winter for me, I don't do physical inactivity very well and it is really hard to keep the weight off sitting on my butt. Once the weather gets better, we will have to schedule a ride together.

BTW, how is your wife doing?
